Number of records in a report

i am looking on some report previously developed by someone in access. i am trying to get the total number of records that are in the report i have the page numbers and the number of page correctly been displayed but when i try to display the number of record it doesnt work

p.s. the form is built from a query that accepts start and endate to find the correct results

i tried to thing
1. i created a label and set the control source to "=count" that displayed a figure but it wasn't correct

2. next i tried setting it to count(*) or count(column name)* and i get a #error when i run the report what am i doing wrong or can anyone shed any light on what i need to do

i got to fix it guys the prob was that i was trying to put the count in the footer but i guess that was out of the scope of the query so when i place it in body of the report it came up
