GPRS vs HSCSD

I have been wondering for awhile if the jury is out on the battle between GPRS vs HSCSD. With GPRS being rolled out at such a fast rate, will there be a place for HSCSD.

Which do you think is the better technology? I personally think GPRS will edge out HSCSD not sure which one is the better technology. I wonder sometimes if we will look back at this battle as another VCR vs Bata Max. Will they compliment each other as some people argue.

What do you guys think?

GPRS seems to be a better system, gprs speeds can be much higher than HSCSD

but based on what I just read HSCSD seems to be faster. ???

i basically know the GPRS system in and out but I have never come in contact with HSCSD so I could not comment on it.

Says they currently upgrading HSCSD from 28.8 to 43.2kbps. At best my gprs connection is 46kbps.

And gprs can support up to 115kbps not so sure if it can really support 978kbps.

Achieving the theoretical maximum GPRS data transmission speed of 172.2 kbps would require a single user taking over all eight timeslots without any error protection. Clearly, it is unlikely that a network operator will allow all timeslots to be used by a single GPRS user. Additionally, the initial GPRS terminals are expected be severely limited- supporting only one, two or three timeslots. The bandwidth available to a GPRS user will therefore be severely limited. As such, the theoretical maximum GPRS speeds should be checked against the reality of constraints in the networks and terminals. The reality is that mobile networks are always likely to have lower data transmission speeds than fixed networks.

RESULT: Relatively high mobile data speeds may not be available to individual mobile users until Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) or Universal Mobile Telephone System (3GSM) are introduced.

Speed will be the determining factor no matter what and GPRS is 3 times as faster than HSCSD High Speed Circuit Switching Data.

i wonder how many time slots CnW and digi are allowing us to use on their networks. when i connect using the Nokia D311 Manager on CnW it shows data download rate at 27.1 kbps and upload at 9.0 kbps. if i am uploading a file both evens out at 18.1kbps. I dont use digi gprs.

i am wondering if this is programmed on the sim and if when they start "charging" they will improve the speed / timeslots. I just cant get any info on these things from their call centre ppl. anyone on here knows about this?

They should start using EDGE.
