Default Software development companies in Jamaica

    Hello,

I looked all the techjamaica links about IT companies in Jamaica and I only found only one company which seems realy specialized in software development. So, I would like to know if this field of IT is realy present in Jamaica, and if yes, could you give me some links and some names. Looking the members skills of techjamaica, I supposed that more than one company is specialized in software developement in Jamaica.
When I speak about software development I don't mean software integration and/or system integration.
I hope I am clear because I am not accostuming in using such english IT terms.

Thanks for your answer. I get an error when I click on the lick above. I did not know that Jamaica used offshore in India!I will try to find with which India companies Jamaican's software companies work with.

Let me see if I can help you:

MCS - Management Control Systems (Subsidary of JNBS) - makers of the web flex top application used by Digicel

PeopleCorp - strong ties with JMMB I believe, most of JMMB's development is done by PeopleCorp

Indusa (not sure if I spelt this correctly) - strong ties with CIT, in fact this company is one of the institutions that made CIT happen. Located in Mobay on the freeport specializing in software development for off-shore companies

Apex Solutions - not sure if core systems development is done here but I know they do some form of solutions development.

Note though that the majority of people in Jamaica working in the field of I.T. do not work for companies with I.T. as their core function; I.T. is said to be the most effective means of Organizational change and increasing productivity/efficiency so most companies will have an I.T. department which is how people like myself gets employed. Think of JPS, Digicel, CWJ, all the Banks - they have an I.T. department which although does not do all the software development for their company plays a vital role

Thanks for all this precision about I.T term seenbee20. I will examine all companies you provide me. My first feeling is that, none of those companies done pure software development, except MCS with web flex applicaiton which seems to be a big one. Customization is a term that is often present in their description.
I am trying to compare the I.T Jamaican market with the French West Indies one. In French West Indies companies, most of the time, big applications are developped by french metropolitan companies (I mean companies located in France). In Jamaica, I learn through this forum, that offshore is often used, in particular with India. Why? Financial reason?
At present I work in France on a ressource management software for port that is implemented in C++. This software is already deploy in Guadeloupe and Martinique. Although this two island have I.T companies, none of them obtain the market. After a discussion with my chief who lead the project, he learned me that one says that French West Indies I.T companies was not mature enough to develop such a product. What about in Jamaica?

    Thanks.

"Pure" Software development companies are getting very rare and not just in Jamaica as this seems to be the trend now-a-days.

In regards to the outsourcing of development work to countries such as India, in my opinion this is predominantly done to cut costs which in reality is something that all companies will try to do at one point or another. Software development labor in India for example is very cheap compared to other regions as software developers are in abundance there.

Just look at this scenario, a bank wants to buy a new Transaction Processing system; what are the available options?

    1) Have your development team develop this system in-house
    2) Seek to buy an already developed system which closely meets your needs
    3) Have a reputable I.T. software development company develop the system from scratch (especially if your I.T. department is not up to par)

If one were to examine the pros and cons of each of the available options and depending on the need of the business (how long can they wait to have the system in the production environment?, experteist of local resources etc), option 2 may and based on what I have seen in the industry tends to be the choice that most senior managers opt for especially in a competitive market environment where the need to gain competitive advantage is great.

Like I said before, "pure software development" is somewhat phrasing out and more and more companies are looking at solutions which can give them an immediate impact, companies now seem not to have the patience to wait on a system to be developed when it can be purchased off the shelf thus leading to I.T. departments which predominantly provide support and maintenance to systems bought by their employer rather than providing the service of software development
