Are the other machines on the LAN using XP? If so, a windows me system on a XP network will have some incompatibility problems. Try configuring the NETBIOS protocol in ME to better communicate with xp.

Open Internet Explorer (*gasp*). Go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > CONNECTION. Make sure the LAN SETTINGS are properly set and that it's not set to use a modem. Select the checkbox beside Automatically detect settings.
