Re:cross over network cables
They're typically used to directly connect two computers by their NICs without going through a hub/switch.

Re:cross over network cables
think of it as swapping the transmit end with the recieve end and vice versa of two computers... ummm or like flipping the mouth piece on a telephone so two separate parties can communicate. Cheap and dirty. If you want I can give you a plam pilot app that has the cable layout so you can make your own.

Re:cross over network cables
This is just a simple guideline Paulos.
1. When connecting a computer to a Hub, Switch, or Router you use a straight through cable.
2. When connecting a computer to a computer use a crossover cable.
Do you remember in Win98 and up the feature that allows you to connect you laptop directly to you desktop. I think the path is Start|Programs |Accessories|communications then select Direct cable connect (DCC). You are given the option to make you computer the guess or host. Then you asked if you want to use a parallel or serial cable connect the two machines. Do you remember this? Well you do not have to go though all this if you have crossover cable. You simply plug the cable at the back of the two computers and you have a simple network without the use of a hub. You get the point Paulos. Using a crossover cable is just a convenient way of transferring files between two computers using NIC instead of serial of parallel cables.
The difference in cable wiring
The straight through cable uses 8 wires which as configuration pin 1 connecting directly to pin1 at the other end of the cable
The crossover cable as wires that are crossed over. Pin1 connects to pin3 at the other end of the cable.
Peace,
Kacey

Once the cross-over cable is in place and the two computers are talking to each other, setting up ICS is the same as on a regular network. Depending on the OS on the PCs, setup the Internet connection on the 'server' and share it. Assuming that Win2K is the OS on the 'server', simply go to the "sharing" tab of the properties window for the Internet connection that you plan to share and select the checkbox to share it.
If I haven't forgotten, the client should be able to detect the shared connection if the "automatically detect settings" checkbox is selected in the Internet Options/Connections/LAN settings within IE.
