Do companies(not pc repair shops) still hire people who only have A+, or are they now looking for peeps who have other certs as well?

qualifications + experience = better chance of getting hired.

Competition for jobs is very high so you definitely need do differentiate yourself from every other job seeker. So if you have multiple skills you have an advantage over someone who is only skilled in 1 area.

Hence if most guys just have A+ and you have that and MCSA or some other certs, you have a distinct advantage. Employers will always want people with the potential to give them more value for the said paycheque.

That's right BCK, in addition to that:
    • Fujitsu-ICL takes people with A+ certs. It makes it easier for you to become DELL-Certified after that. They pay for it.
    • So does Innovative systems. They been hiring a lot of such folks. But ofcourse, you know it's going to largely be a sales related job.
    • Intcomex also specifically requires this cert for getting a job there.
    • Other software companies like Management Control Systems will take you with an A+ Cert as well. However, you won't get far in that company without a degree.

Of all the companies listed, perhaps Fujitsu-ICL will be your best bet, considering you love to tinker with hardware 'n all.

But BCK is right about the degree thing. Companies will take you with a cert, but when it comes to the degree business, others will definitely get a better position (and paycheck) with the degree.

There is a flipside to all of this though. If everybody comes in with a degree, who's going to tinker with the hardware? I'm sure blowing your mind for a degree is not worth going into a company to just tinker with hardware - unless you feel ok with that.... :-\

There's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path. So if you're going in with certs only, be sure to know that Jamaican companies don't value certs like American companies. Jamaicans prefer to see the piece of paper (which you could just print yourself - today's inject printers make that possible) - especially government. Gov't is so shallow minded, that if you told them that you could build an enterprise network from the molecular level, they still won't hire you unless you have a degree. I kid you not. ???

In America, certs can get you more pay than a degree, since American companies, particularly large ones, pay you according to your skillset and not your papers. That's one of the reasons American tech companies are more productive. That's why one in every 10 advertisements on TechTV is about SmartCertify and a host of other cert companies. Most of these people who testify to the power of being certified don't have IT degrees.

So as long as you plan to continue living in Jamaica and you might end up working for someone else, get your degree dude. You won't regret it.

Keep in mind as well that companies that have their core business as providing IT services and solutions for clients tend to value certifications more than companies in which IT is more of a support service and not core business. Eg. a company selling/supporting/implementing Microsoft Windows networks will value someone with an MCSE. This is so because:

    1. Having certified staff shows that the company has qualified, trained competent people on board - builds customer confidence.

    2. To get benefits from vendors (eg. to get partner status) such as Microsoft, Cisco etc. companies may need to have a certain quota of certified staff on board.

For companies that don't have IT as their core business, it's very likely that their IT support will involve working with different technologies. Therefore they would want people with more skills and qualifications.
A+ alone isn't likely to be sufficient. You'd have to supplement it with other skills and qualifications.

And just as Xeno said...your chances of upward mobility are greatly impared if you do not have a first degree (BSc.)

You can always leave and come back as a consultant/genius once they figure out that you are a one man IT department. Don't try it though it might not work and you'll be out of a job. I think it's the random burst of radiation emanating from my monitor. ;D
