Ok where should i start?? I cant believe there r peeps that didnt enjoy LOTR. This isnt a movie like the matrix that is open for debate on a widescale because of graphics and whatnot, this is a spectacularly written story. These books are classics. The movie just illustrates these books. The story line is gripping, so someone saying its boring is weird. This movie is for people who enjoy a movie with a good storyline. I hope the person who finds it boring did actually watch both movies and not just the second. "To each man his own still". The third installment will be spectacular, I know it wont be missed by LOTR fans.
Dont u guys think that the two movies that are argueably the best ever will reach their final climax at the end of the year is kinda weird, if not planned? But maybe i am just reading too much into it. Oh by the way the two movies are LOTR and The Matrix.

On a lighter note Matro what is Saving Ryan's Private?? I have heard summen about this before.

    Xenocrates. Post # 1000

    And he wrote:

Sandor, I really don't know how to tell you that you're missing out on THE greatest adventure story ever conceived. I guess you don't understand why LOTR is so great. Well, let me school you. Matronyx and others, if I forget anything, please fill them in for me. Please stay with me, this is going to be VEEERRY long. (as per xeno usual...)

The Lord Of The Rings is to Story Telling as Star Wars or The Matrix is to modern cinema, or as Michael Jordan is to basketball. The LOTR epics which were written over a period of about 30 years (yes! 30 years!) actually started as a bit of random conceptualisations by a then young John Ronald Ruel Tolkien.

What inspired the actual creation of the stories was when Tolkien (pronounced Tow-keen, not Toll-ki-en as many people err) was marking an exam paper for english literature. One student had not completed the exam. The very last question on the paper required students to write a story. This one boy simply wrote in the middle of the page:

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit"

...and nothing more. Tolkien stared at the one line in the middle of the otherwise blank page for what had to be a few hours. In that time, he conjoured up a story around a hobbit. He didn't know what a hobbit was, and the word "hobbit" was not in the English dictionary. Until now... check its definition here.

So it was a word that the boy had made up entirely. Since the boy made no allocations to the meaning of the word, Tolkien used it to spawn what would become one of the greatest stories ever told. This story was called, quite simply: "The Hobbit". For those of you who have the book, look at the very first line of the story, and you will see the very same line as above. This Hobbit was called Bilbo Baggins.

Now, if you've ever read Tolkien Sandor, you will realise that his is not a writing style that you can start reading and then put it down. In fact, his writing style has become so famous, that over 50 years later, Joanne K. Rowling mimicked this writing style in the Harry Potter series and is now enjoying a very similar success!

Tolkien writes like he was there! That's what makes the books so difficult to put down once you've started reading them. He writes as though he was giving a first hand account of the situation, as though he was overhearing the conversations... that's why his books are addictive reading. Even folks who hate reading will find that in no time they would have conquered the books.

Another thing that makes LOTR so big, is the fact that it literally INVENTED the genre of Fantasy as we know it today. People were writing fantasy stories long before Tolkien. There were people like Hans Christian Andersen (Snow White, Thumbelina, The Little Mermaid and a host of others). But Fantasy was either derived from popular lore (so many believed there was truth to it) or was just passed down through generations by word of mouth. Until the Lord of The Rings, Fantasy was hardly worthy of books!

Finally, if you've ever thought that The Lord of The Rings is not introducing something you've never seen before in a fantasy adventure - you're wrong. EVERYTHING that we've come to appreciate about fantasy stories was invented by The Lord of The Rings! Take the following for example:
    • The word 'Elf' was first used to describe immortal fairies with human like appearances in The Lord Of The Rings. Legolas (Orlando Bloom) in the movies is an elf. So is Arwen (Liv Tyler), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Elrond (Hugo Weaving....aka agent Smith ;D). However, popular Fantasy stories accentuated by Disney classics have reduced fairies (and subsequently, elves) to tiny creatures, often with wings. But elves were never short, or tiny creatures. In fact, elves are supposed to represent angels, which are taller, fairer, long haired creatures from the nether realm.... but that's another story... ;D
    • Remember how Dungeons & Dragons is based around a Wizard, halflings, a dwarf, an elf and a Human Knight with swords battling evil minions? Sounds familiar? Every game based on this concept was spawned from LOTR! Every movie spawned from this concept, was based on LOTR! The concept of the axe-wielding Dwarf was also created by the Lord of the Rings stories. So the next time you play Dungeons & Dragons or one of the many hundreds of its spin-offs which have cluttered every gaming system since 1973, remember, they were first conceived by the LOTR stories!
    • Have you ever played Warcraft? Who did you think came up with the word "Orc"? Tolkien did. Yes. Those Orcs (aka Goblins) in the Warcraft series of games were meticulously designed from the descriptions in Tolkien's books! Again, another popular concept spawned from LOTR.
    • The concept of individuals with specialised skills going on a quest was first conceived in LOTR - The Fellowship of The Rings. That is why every popular Role Playing Game today (like Final Fantasy, Morrowind, Ice Wind Dale, Ultima etc.) has characters that you use with specialised skills. Usually you have one with magical power (Gandalf), one with stealth and agility (Legolas) one with a great deal of strength (Gimili) and the last one which usually leads the pack, has a fair balance of everything (Aragorn). So the next time you pick up an RPG, remember, LOTR is responsible for its existence!
    • While writing the stories, Tolkien created a full lexicon language called Elvish. It has its own full fledged vocabulary, verbage, idiomatic constructs, grammatical rules, tenses - the WHOLE WORKS! It's a fully functional language that can be learned just like English, French or Spanish. In fact, Elvish is so expansive, it has (an estimated) 780,000 word strong vocabulary! That's more words than the standard english language has! Elvish is spoken in the movie by... well... elves... and also by Aragorn.

As was said before, the entire story consists of 5 books. They are:
    • The Silmarillion - The rise and fall of Middle Earth. It tells how hobbits came to be, how Gandalf and Saruman were sent from heaven to guard over mankind on earth, how the elves travelled from the Nether realm to populate middle earth, how Sauron was once an elf that served the Elven lords, but became evil through his own selfishness and created a ring of power to dominate the world. It shows the first war of the ring and how Sauron was defeated (which is shown in an epilogue at the beginning of the first LOTR movie) ...... Only for really REALLY hardcore fans....
    • The Hobbit - This book introduces Bilbo Baggins (Frodo's Uncle) when Bilbo was still young, and Frodo wasn't born yet. It shows how Bilbo met Gandalf and the 12 dwarves, and how they went on a quest to reclaim the treasure that belonged to the dwarves that was taken from them by a clever dragon called Smaug. It also introduces for the first time, Smeagol (my precioussss ;D). Most importantly, it showed how Bilbo accidentally found the Ring of Power (the one ring), how he used it's vanishing powers to escape being eaten by Smeagol, and how it set up the events for the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. This book is a fascinating read. You haven't read anything until you've read this book. Awesome stuff!!
    • The Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship Of The Ring - This is the first epic in the trilogy which (as you have already seen) shows how Bilbo passed on the one Ring to Frodo, who is forced to go on a quest to destroy the Ring and is aided by his 3 Hobbiton friends, plus Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas & Boromir. The quest takes a turn for the worst when Gandalf falls in Moria and Saruman creates a hybrid race of men and Orcs, called the Uruk-Hai which dismember the fellowship (as was seen at the end of the first movie) and force Frodo and Sam on their own path while Aragorn, Gimli & Legolas pursue the other two hobbits, Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry) and Pereguin Took (Pippin)...
    • The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers - The second epic documents the pursuit of the hobbits (Merry & Pippin) by the heroic threesome (reminds you of Dungeons & Drangons doesn't it?), the decimation of the orcish horde by the fair men of the horse, from the kingdom of Rohan, the resurrection of Gandalf, the unlikely party formed between Smeagol and Frodo & Sam, the vicious attack of the mountain men on Rohan, the battle of the warg riders (giant wolves ridden by orcs), the attack on the Tower of Orthanc by the Ents (walking, talking trees), and the final climatic battle between a ten thousand strong army of Uruk-Hai and the embattled Rohanites at Helm's Deep. This served up quite an epic box office blast. But you folks haven't seen anything yet!
    • The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King - This is where things get wicked. If you thought the Two Towers was huge, you haven't seen an epic battle yet. This book documents the final battle of the Ring and how Aragorn will become King, and unite all the kingdoms of men in middle earth.

    • Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) never goes anywhere without the sword he carries in the movie. I'm serious. Even though filming has wrapped for the movie over two years now, He still carries his sword with him - even when he goes to KFC to have lunch with his family. In fact, while filming, he never takes off his costume - unless he is changing clothes.
    • Viggo is a natural horseback rider. He was the only lead actor that didn't need training in horseback riding. In fact, he was the one that trained most of the other actors on the set.
    • Viggo didn't spend much time in a trailer like the other actors. He became so involved in the character that he was playing (Aragorn), that he built real camps of wood and brush and thrived off fish that he caught in a nearby lake. Talk about a dedicated actor!
    • Despite all of this, Viggo Mortensen has never read The Lord Of The Rings. He wouldn't have taken the part unless his 12 year old son told him how awesome the stories are. He only read the books AFTER the movies wrapped. Sometimes life is stranger than fiction...
    • For the entire duration of the first movie (The Fellowship of The Rings) the script was changed constantly. So every morning the actors were given a new script.
    • None of the actors knew each other and met for the very first time on the set. By the end of filming, most of the actors had formed cliques and clans and maintain them even off-set.
    • Most of the stunt men have websites dedicated to themselves about the 5 seconds they spent on camera. Here is one of them.
    • Whenever the stuntmen playing the orcs are to attack set of people, they are given blood curdling speeches by the set director to mame and murder the actors by their real names. This is to give the realistic effect of bloodlust in their faces. In one take, Viggo peed himself from seeing the orcs charge at him during the first movie......
    • The massive battles between orcs and elves are not scripted. The combatants are simply told to fight. They make up the rest. Remember, they had real weapons...
    • One of the main Characters of the Books, Tom Bombadil, is not in the movie. (Thank God!)
    • One of the main characteristics of the books - the frequent citing of poems and lymerics by the main characters, was also docked from the script.
    • Elvish is certified by the University of Oxford as an official Language.
    • Tolkien renamed himself (and his wife) to elvish names. You can only find their gravesite if you can read Elvish.
