If you can deal with the inconvenience of having to use a flat surface or if you can find a connecting cable, you could just get a regular GPRS capable phone to perform these functions as opposed to getting a separate unit that you'll just periodically use. The very inexpensive Sony Ericsson T310 or T316 performs quite well using infra red.
