    I'm using Mandrake 9.1. Sorry I didn't mention that.

Stan, when I decide to install php and apache and will definetly make a post about it, if I run into problems. (which I probably will)

igotit, I dodn't know you had to uninstall before installing a newer program? Wouldn uninstalling remove the dependecy files? It would probably ask you if you want them removed.

For Mandrake 9.1 you'll find this link helpful.

    http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php

It allows you to configure urpmi and by extension rpmdrake to do internet updates (translation no more dependency headaches).
    Try it you'll like it:

[/quote]pigeon, it looks useful, but not sure what to do with it.
What am I to download? Core files? External add-ons?

the site generates some commands that will update your urpmi database.
Get everything except core files which will probably be on your CDs anyway.

    need further tips?

Funny, i'm using mandrake 9.1 at home and GAIM works like a charm!!

Maybe you should try installing from the rpm instead of the tarball.
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/g...6.rpm?download

When you get that file just run your regular rpm -Uvh gaim-0.67-1mdk9.1.i586.rpm.

Another alternative to look into when dealing with dependency issues on a whole is to use apt-get. (must admit, havent tried it in mandrake yet, but works great in RH9)
This lil tool is so wonderfull, all you need to do is say "go fecth this ....", well... more like apt-get [filename] --fix-missing. Then apt searches the online repositories you specified for the latest version of the file for YOUR distro, get all the necessary dependency files, and installs it... BANG!!! MAGIC ;D

Mandrake's got a tool that work's very similar to apt-get called urpmi
uprmi gaim - installs the newset version of gaim.
rpmdrake, which should be somewhere on your programs menu, uses uprmi in the background.
Just make sure the list of your repositories are kept up2date and you should be sailing on calm seas..... :

Thanks PF. Will do that then.

Tronyx, gaim works ok for me too. I was just wanting to upgrade it to the latest version. I like using the latest version of software. And I also wanted to get the experience of installing/upgrading a program.
I'm using version 0.59 of gaim, and the latest version is 0.67.

I usually download the RPM files for the program I want to install. If the rpm's is not available I go with the tarballs.

I will try your suggestions. Thanks.

Guys I know that I don't contribute much, but time will tell.
Anyway, I installed Opera, but can only launch it properly in root. Launching it in another user account causes a Segmentation fault.
    What can be done?

I'd report that bug to the opera developers. They tend to be very responsive.
