Microsoft working with Feds; virus attacks may be terrorism
"Virus Attack maybe related to bad programming..." --IGodIT

Evidence gathered by Microsoft, the FBI, and the Secret Service will be released linking the worldwide attacks made against computers running the Windows operating system to "terrorist activity."

Sources inside the U.S.-based software maker say recent attacks against from the "Blaster" worm and its variants, coupled with an email virus called "SoBig-F" show signs of a coordinated attack by an entity wanting to disrupt world commerce. Microsoft is cooperating with both the FBI and the Secret Service and will report their findings in the next few days. While at present no terrorist organizations have claimed responsibility for these attacks in cyberspace, Microsoft is an obvious target for terrorists as the largest, most recognizable, and immensely profitable software company in the world.

The Blaster worm exploits a flaw in the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) component used by Microsoft Windows, the operating system installed on an estimated 90% of all home and corporate desktop computers worldwide. A patch was made available free of charge by Microsoft in July 2003, but few home or corporate users downloaded the fix. The Blaster worm seeks out any Internet-enabled Windows computer without the fix, installs malicious code that takes control of the computer, and beings attacking a Microsoft corporate Web site used to distribute software fixes to Windows users.

SoBig-F is a rehash of a virus first spread by hackers in January 2003. The "F" strain clogs e-mail systems full of messages with subjects like "Re: Details" and "Re: Wicked screensaver," and then installs a "Trojan horse" program that is used to spit out thousands of copies of the virus from the victims' computers.

    Sobig.F Virus Traced to Korea

The National Police Agency (NPA) yesterday said it is investigating an Internet Protocol (IP) address here that may have had a role in the spread of the Sobig.F virus, a computer worm that has clogged e-mail inboxes worldwide since last week. The Cyber Terror Response Center within the NPA said it started the investigation at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI on Saturday. Of 20 IP addresses suspected of being behind the circulation of Sobig.F, one was provided by domestic Internet service firm KT, the FBI told the cyber terror squad. A 36-year-old office worker in Suwon, Kyonggi Province was found to be the user of the IP address but police said it is unclear whether he was directly involved as he seems to have no particular computer skills. ``Right now, it seems the man’s IP address has been used by hackers, but we have to complete our investigation to be sure,’’ Yang Kum-won, superintendent at the center, said. ``It is hard to determine whether the hackers operated within Korea or from overseas.’’ The results of the investigation will come out in two or three days after police finish examining the man’s computer to see how it was involved in the spread of the virus.

Virus Profilers say that the SoBig author was an American probably from Florida

The hunt is on. Teams of FBI experts are poring through computer databases in the United States, tracking a shadowy quarry through cyberspace. They do not know their target's name but they do know he is clever and that he must be stopped. He is a virus writer and mastermind behind the fastest computer virus ever devised. His creation spread its tentacles around the globe last week, smothering countless computer systems with its sheer weight of email traffic. It was called SoBig F, and it lived up to its name by becoming so huge that by the end of the week one in 15 emails across the entire world was coming from the virus. But the identity of SoBig's creator, like so many in the world of computer viruses, remains a secret. He could be a teenager, holed up in a bedroom and nursing a juvenile grudge against the world. Or the virus writer could be on an ego-trip: simply wanting to see his creation dominate the world's computer systems. He could be a criminal, working in the pay of 'spammers' who send mass junk emails across the world and who want to learn new techniques from the virus's astonishing speed. FBI and anti-virus computer sources confirmed that the author was an American and almost certainly a man. They have also determined that his virus shares some of the characteristics popular with spammers. As most spammers live in Florida, that could place the virus writer in that state as well, perhaps near the town of Boca Raton, the unofficial spam capital of the world.

Sobig.F Virus Traced to Korea then Virus Profilers say that the SoBig author was an American probably from Florida, I think IGodIT " Sobig.F Virus Traced to Korean probably living in Florida". Will they ever make up their minds. Then you have Microsoft trying to start a panic about terrorism, yeah terrorising M$ products.

SoBig.F is the sixth version of a virus that first appeared in January. Each one has been stronger than the previous.

SoBig.F is programmed to expire on September 10.

We would expect to see the next one some time after September 10, not necessarily on September 11, but within the ensuing weeks.

[/quote]Kilaj, it's fear. A lot of the US citizens are living in fear.

I use to think like that myself. Everything that happens they instantly think about it being a terrorist attack, I thought it was silly. But try putting yourself in thier shoes. You got a set of people who will do anything to kill americans, even at the sacrifice of thier own lives. They have declared thier hatred for the US over television. And they demonstrated that by killing hundreds of people already on 2 planes. They don't know what else these people will do.

I would think if something like that was happening to Jamdown, we would be jumping at the slightest sound in the night, much less a nation wide blackout.
