    Get rid of the worm...

    1. Patch Your System with the appropriate MS03-026 Patch

    2. After Installation of the Patch, Reboot your system.

    3. Download and run "FIXBLAST".exe to remove the MSBLAST.exe file, terminate the process and remove added registry keys by the worm.

    4. Reboot your pc one last time.

    5. Visit WindowsUpdate.com more often and take note of our repeated warnings to keep your system updated.

    Result:
Your System will no longer shutdown after 60secs, please follow the steps above to remove the worm off your computer and return your system to UPDATED safe status.

UPDATE: If your having problems installing the patch within the 60 sec, when you see the window pop up telling you 60 sec, Go to Start, Run and type in shutdown -a. This will abort the shutdown attempt.

Download: Windows XP Patch | Windows 2000 Patch

Download: FixBlast - W32.Blaster.Worm Removal Tool

There is no confirmation of this as yet, just the word that is going around.

    This just in

Email sent to Microsoft Support Team

    Team,

I am aware that there is a lot of information in regards to this new virus that has been released. The best thing that we can do at this point is ensure that if they have Windows XP is to make sure that their firewall is turned on and that they have the latest critical updates installed on their system from Windows Update.

I would ask that you all periodically check the following links/sites for updates:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/ , the Windows Update site itself for all of the latest information. MS has expected that something more concrete should be made available soon.

-Remember Virus Support is best effort support only, Let’s not waste time on calls that are out of our Support Boundary at this time. Until an update is made available please advise your customer that MS is working on a solution and when one is provided it will be placed on the Windows Update site along with the other critical updates. Encourage them to check with the Windows Update site often and refer them to the following links for the latest information http://www.microsoft.com/security/
    worm (n.)
A subclass of virus. A worm generally spreads without user action and distributes complete copies (possibly modified) of itself across networks. A worm can consume memory or network bandwidth, thus causing a computer to stop responding.

You may notice at this time, Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) website does not work. Too much traffic...

News Update: To all the MS users who have not yet unplugged from the Matrix, its crashing. I'm going into Linux see you all in a bit.

:'( trust me last nite i was sick of the RPC thing but i did not know it was a virus/trojan that was causing it to crash and ask for shutdown/reboot

but i learnt a little trick that prevented me from actually shuttiing down

when windows or any admin/user run the shutdown command it can be aborted with another shutdown command with the -a option "shutdown -a" so when i saw it last nite i just did that a continued working

now that i know about this rpc thing i'm going to do something that was in order from a long time now --- a clean wipe of my system :

I have never been so pissed in my life. The worm was easy enough to find, I knew I had it b4 the shutdown scenario occured, just by looking in task manager (something I do a lot) and noticing a program thatr shouldn't be there. Removed the registry entry, the file itself, and turned of DCom, dowloaded the WinXP patch, applied it, installed Zone Alarm Pro, I went the whole nine yards...

Only now my freaking FTP transfers are slower than a *****. I am extremely upset. Noone posted a fix for this little porblem, and I use FTP everyday to maintain my sites. My clients are fuming, I am fuming, this is very frustrating, I have no time for a clean install, does anyone know a way around this FTP thing, or am I really screwed...
