    Default Zaurus SL-5500

I finally got my Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 after much deliberation. I couldn't decide between the IPAQ 3950, Toshiba e740 or the Zaurus and decided to go with the Zaurus just for the fun of it. (Okay, I was influenced by KBee and CKnight)

After playing with this animal for one day I am convinced that I made the right decision. There are many apps for the Zaurus (check out www.thekompany.com) and the integrated QWERTY keyboard is awesome not to mention the large colorful LCD screen.

It comes with both Compact Flash and SD card expansion slots which of course gives me the best of two worlds.

I decided not to Syncronize with MS Outlook using the bundled Intellisync Software but to go fully with the included Qtopia desktop Software which gives a fast and clean syncronization between the PDA and the PC (via USB cradle). I wasn't using Outlook to store contact numbers anyway.

No complaints so far. I also got 128Meg of SD Memory to expand my storage and am surprised that large apps like dictionaries and bible software only take up about 5 Megs of space. The average software is about 200 - 500K.

The Zaurus is fast and the best part of it all is that it runs on Linux (Embedix) with QT Palmtop Environment. The Zaurus can run Java apps and the terminal app will allow you to type your usual commands on a command line.

The Zaurus is a must for anyone who feels a bit bored now and then and needs a toy that can also manage all their personal information.

I guess a trade for my palm m100 is out of the question, so lets do the next best thing, just leave it to me in your will.

I'm a few clicks from outfitting myself with a palm m515. Fullsize keyboard so that I can take notes and a Seiko Smartpad. Can the Zaurus compare?

While I don't own a Zaurus, I think that it's far superior when compared with the Palms. The Zaurus by virtue of running Linux will offer more versatility, 3rd party support and availability of apps. The SL-5500 also comes with a neatly built-in keyboard for easy typing (thumbing). But then again, if all you want to use are the typical PIM features, then the Palm would probably serve you and is cheaper.

I'll leave the full Zaurus defense for RobyG

So do you think I can type notes in classes with a Zaurus SL-5500?

This is why we need to deal with technology as we do stocks , buy low sell high, well i guess it is somewhat different, buy new sell two day before newer release.
    read this from http://www.thinkmobile.com/News/00/59/03/ :
Competition in the enterprise handheld PDA space got a little more heated Tuesday with Sharp Electronics introducing two new Linux-based models.

Sharp said the newest models -- Zaurus SL-5600 in the United States and the Zaurus B500 in Japan -- were designed for the enterprise user with a heavy workload. The devices offer a 400MHz Intel XScale processor featuring a 32-bit instruction cache and a 32-bit data cache and 100MHz memory interface.
    ................
Sharp said the SL-5600 has been built with an integrated speaker and microphone offering corporate users a mobile enterprise device.
    ..........
Wireless connectivity is handled by dual expansion slots and built-in drivers for 802.11b wireless LAN adaptors, CDPD Wireless modem, 10/100 Ethernet, and 56K V.90 modems. Connectivity through 1xRTT and GPRS is expected in 2003.
