If you are using Windows XP...ensure that you have service pack 2 installed...Enable the Firewall that comes with it...You can also get a free copy of Zonealarm for additional protection...Make sure that you have an Antivirus software, like AVG...or Norton...

You can download Microsoft Antispyware...it works and is free...Also do an image of your drive to DVD if possible, that way you can roll-back if something major happens.

Be careful not to download any programmes or music that is commercially available. If you do, you will be guilty of piracy.

Personally i never use antivirus (yeh, yeh, yeh, i know). You never actually need one unless you intend to do something silly like visit porn sites or warez sites, or if your going to allow other people to use your machine as an administrator or limited user.

Avoid downloading anything that you don't absolutely need and only download from sites/people that you 100% trust.

Stay away from file sharing programs.

Spyware detection/removal tools are good to have (stay away from SPYSHERRIF), and so is a good firewall like Blackice defender.

Oh, and avoid internet explorer. Get firefox or better yet: Opera.

I suggest using a 3rd party firewall instead... such as Zonalarm or Sygate.

Now Keroed1 i have had ADSL from MAY, JUNE there abouts and i have'nt gotten any spyware or virus. Here is what i do:

    - I never log on to the net as administrator i create a seperate account to log on. When spyware get onto your machine it needs administrative privileges to install.

    - I use Mozilla as my web browser of choice. Now i guarantee you it is might be slower than IE but it offers you alot my security from virus and spyware treats.

    - I use windows firewall well because it is there.

Now i have never worried too much about the treat of viruses and spyware as i think as a techie it is a good practice to wipe your machine every few months. As a result i seperate my data from OS, and would really suggest people do the same. Too often i see people panic when crashes to PC occur.

Really i think anti-virus take up too much valuable harddrive space and so i just secure my data, do the minimal stuff and leave the rest to chance.

Wipe system every few months...you can't be serious.

If your a techie then you don't need to be doing that. Anyway...

Firewall: Anway, ZoneAlarm or some other firewall program is a must. I'm about to get ZoneAlarm cause i just get my ADSL yesterday.
Antispyware Program with Real-Time Scanning: I also installing CounterSpy for spyware as this program has been tested and rated #1 and some people have said that its better to use than ZoneAlarms new antispyware tool.

Antivirus is still very necessary no matter which sites you go on because is not only through websites persons are connecting to your machine.

    Nothing beats COMMON SENSE.

Type of Sites you visit is a factor to what things get on your machine....and if you must visit them then be extra vigilant.
Also be aware that there are bots on the net running just looking for IPs that are vulnerable. With the advent of ADSL and longer times "connected" your at a higher risk of getting infected.

Tests have shown that it only takes 7 minutes for a system to be completely taken over by simply being connected to the Internet....no browsing...just being connected.

PS: If you have the money and think it necessary, a Hardware Firewall would do you good too. You can never have enough but most persons don't bother with the hardware 1 but you have to remember that your on the Internet more with ADSL so you ave now increased your chance of "ketching something"
