I really don't see any other ISP competing with C & W right now. Other ISP may be able to offer lower/similar prices, but I haven't seen any that can compete in terms of stability and service.

So for me,it doesn't boil down to just cost but the total package, and C & W currently is the forerunner in terms of the total solution.

You're mostly right seanbee, but as hard as it may seem, other ISPs can carve out their niche in areas where ADSL isn't available and offer value-added services that C&W doesn't offer (at the moment). It won't be easy because ADSL is widely available, but I'm sure there are areas.

Yup, good point, makes you wonder if they really gonna cut prices, because they not under any pressure from the compitition, and we know is only when them under pressure them act

No man competition is there, the good thing is C & W has been very proactive instead of being reactive. I guess they have learnt from past experiences (remember Digicel's entry [the rest is history])

I beg to disagree J2 is one of the better ISP.. However their service is limited to Kingston and Portmore. I get better internet service at home than at work (where we have a 512 K from C&W).

They have to cut prices they are trying to have a foot hold before the fibre lines get here. Im not really looking forward to C&W playing a big role as an internet service provider but cutting prices is the way to go.

Maybe you can say this, because as you said they are only limited to Kingston and Portmore, it gets more difficult to maintain stability/support as you grow.

So the test then for J2 is to see if they can maintain this as they go islandwide.

I dont think an ISP would want to go islandwide right away they would first have to settle in a niche market. also I think its best if an ISP stay localized to specific areas. im sure by the time fibre lines get here there will be lots of ISP in the country areas. Also I wouldn't count on an islandwide span to affect a wireless network. There is a wireless technology that is better than dsl but is still currently in development. This technology will be implemented by J2 and sure to follow are other ISPs. I wouldn't be surprised if C&W jump onto that technolgy to give their network a further reach.

I wouldn't expect them to go islandwide right away, but the point I was making was that, J2 Limited is right now limited to Kingston/Portmore so them supporting their system in my opinion is a easier task than that of C & W.

Also I don't buy into settling into a market niche. I think that any company with a sound business plan would want to capitalize on any oppurtunities that presents itself. Not saying that companies should rush into investments but if an oppurtunity is there companies should take it, and that is the mentality that has held many companies back in this field, they settle for a small piece of the cake, and you know what happens, as C & W/Digicel's money grow, they are better able to take back that market share that was initially lost, so if companies want to settle it will only lead to their demise.

Look at Digicel, when they came in initially, I am sure that they were happy with eating just 10% of C & W's market share, but they didn't settle, they saw the oppurtunity and they took it, now look at them, they are almost in every Caribbean country, why shouldn't J2 adopt this approach (hey we might hear of J2 buying out some big companies in the future). Also look at COK (City of Kingston credit union), they were solely in Kingston, but they saw the oppurtunity to expand and they took it, pretty soon a COK will be in every major business area i assume, once the demand is there.
