    Default It's our Killer Instinct

It's a vicious cycle. Life came first. Then came art. Then art imitated life, then life imitated art imitating life. What we have on our hands here is what sociologists call the "Multiplicity Effect"; where one bad apple ruins the entire bunch and then everyone develops a taste for bad apples. The taste of a good apple becomes repungent or lost to us, in as much as Gollum lost his taste for bread from eating raw or rotting flesh.

In a nutshell, when we create art, it creates a profound sense of appreciation in others for various reasons - mostly for aesthetic or entertainment purposes. That's why art exists. But we've developed a taste for making art that would inspire a more visceral kind of aesthetic appreciation without the positive influences - hence these games and movies. Now we're addicted to it and we can't imagine a world without it.

When one person is daring enough to show bloody violence, foul language or sexual immorality in a popular art form, it has a way of becoming a defacto standard in pop-culture. The reason is because people have a way of thinking to themselves like this:

"If this person was daring enough to publish this risque form of art, then I'm sure I'm not the only person who was thinking like that - that means it's normal to think that way"

When it does, it is repeated in pop culture often enough for it to become accepted, and normal. Our inhibitions to it become deadened over time and we get used to the idea that we were once repulsed about. The same thing is being done with homosexuality in the media - but I digress. The issue here is violent video games.

The fact of the matter is, that in the games of the 1980's, your killer instinct was barely tapped. They were more puzzle and reflex oriented games. Games of the 21st century however, rely less on your reflex skills and more your addiction to the thrill provided by your killer instinct. Every human being has a killer instinct. It's a part of your ID. It forms a fundamental element of your survival instinct. It's the animalistic side of you. Today's games require you to tap into your killer instinct more than ever before.

In fact, a recent survey done by Electronic Boutique and the Federal Communications Commission showed that over 95% of today's games require you to kill, not eliminate by non-violent competition, some virtual avatar - whether AI or human based. This is a massive leap over games of the 1980's, where less than 0.2% were even remotely like that. To become good at such games, you have to build up the cold-blooded nature of your killer instinct so as to be uninhibited about spilling blood.

When Mortal Kombat first debuted in 1991, gamers felt an adrenaline rush they had never felt before. Mortal Kombat was the first mass produced game that tapped into gamers' killer instinct. It was the first time they've ever felt the same kind of blood lust that a common murderer does, but in a safe, contained scenario. The unspeakable sense of euphoria of maiming another human being was unmatched. This was the ultimate next step in videogames. The first players were first taken aback by the bloodiness of Mortal Kombat. But after a while, their inhibitions fell, and they became deadened to the sensation of blood spilling as their sensibilities were inundated with the blood sport. The Killer Instinct was finally resurrected from the age of gladiators.

Nintendo Japan produced a version of the game for the Super NES which had no blood. There was however, a cheat, that allowed them to enable the blood. It was no surprise. The killer instinct in gamers had them crying for blood. Literally. The sight of a maimed player with blood gushing out of their newly made orifices added a dimension to the game that Street Fighter and Super Mario Brothers could never hope to achieve.

Today, there are no options for disabling bloody displays of violence in video games. It has become a socially accepted norm. Our sensibilities have become so numb to it, that if we play a game today in which you're not killing someone, or some bloody maiming takes place, we are quick to get bored or uninterested. The blood lust is there, and we need to be satiated for it in our video games. In today's online shooters, blowing your deathmatch opponents to flying bits of bloody kibble and carnage raises your sense of animalistic pleasure. It's a fundamental part of the joy of playing a violent video game. Your lust for blood and violence has reached tantamount levels. At this point in time, you can't possibly imagine a new game coming out where you don't kill or maime some computer generated avatar. It is unheard of, if not unacceptable.

So if you think that games have absolutely no effect on you - think again. Checkout your stash of favourite game CDs or DVDs and you'll see what I'm talking about.

i have become tired of FPS, i have been playin them since wolfenstein. now i am tired of goin around and killing things for no reason. the reason i play violent video games is not because i like violence, its because most of the games that are comin out now are violent.

have any of u guys played kingdom hearts, it seems childly at first but after a while it gets really interest. when u defeat the enemies they drop coins, there is no blood, no gore but still it is very enjoyable. mario sunshine is also fun once u get to later levels.

once i loaned my fren final fantasy 10, and the first question he asked was where are the guns. gamers are starting to think that if a game is not violent then its not fun. that shouldn't be. look at games like final fantasy, its not violent but its still fun to play

    - What we fail to understand Spadez, is that it's not that it would influence any sensible person to go out and actually replicate what they play in games. The fact that I'm trying to highlight is that gamers are developing a growing desire for more and more violent videogames. It's the growing desire for the violence in games that is disturbing - not that it would influence anyone to go out and actually do it in real life. For to do it in real life, the desire must first be there.

This is no different from the Gladiator blood sports of ancient Rome. The only difference is that unlike then, today's participants get to literally live the experience of simulated killing, and ENJOYING it. That's why these people have a concern about violent video games. The fact that there are kids that ENJOY the thrill of killing - if even in a virtual environment - will be cause for concern for any parent in their right minds.

Make no mistake. The desire you feel is a REAL thing. The enjoyment you get is a REAL thing. It's a primordial desire. That's the dangerous thing. Whether or not you choose to act it out is inconsequential. Because to act it out, the desire and the enjoyment of killing must first be implanted in your mind. Today's gamers already have that desire.

If that doesn't disturb you, check this out:

A study published last year by the US Army showed that:

    - Their best marksmen were Counter Strike afficionadoes
    - Death Metal is played in the head sets of soldiers when clearing streets in Iraq
    - A sharp spike in XBOX, Ghost Recon sales was noted during the War - 40% of which was from US SOLDIERS
    - Several Air Force pilots were under question for their qualification exams for their unusually high marksmanship scores under suspect of cheating. When the investigation was complete, it was discovered that there is a scientific correlation between the viability of US soldiers and the games they play!

To say that US soldiers enjoy putting a bullet into the enemy is an understatement. Only recently there were several court martials of US soldiers in Iraq who brutally mauled unarmed Iraqi militants. The blood lust was so intense, that they forgot the rules of war just for that moment. When these soldiers aren't out getting their fix, and I kid you not, they are in their bunkers in organised Ghost Recon Matches. The demand is so high, that Microsoft contractors have been sent into Iraq for the sole purpose of setting up XBOX Live! servers!

If violent video games have such a profound effect on members of the US military's ground forces, it's not impossible to see how such a desire is potentially dangerous in the average gamer. The only thing they need to make the leap from virtuality to reality is a strong motive. It is speculated by the US department of Defence, (and I'm not making this up!) that psychologically, the United States is more ready for war now than ever before - because of the recent trends in military based videogames!

A Top ranking military official ACTUALLY SAID THIS!!

Consider the gaming franchises that have been dominating the market in recent years:
    - Full Spectrum Warrior
    - Ghost Recon
    - Splinter Cell
    - BattleField
    - Delta Force
    - Medal of Honour
    - Men of Valour
    - Shellshock '67

...I could go on, but I think you get the point. Video game developers don't develop games that won't sell. If they sell, then there is a demand for it. The recent spate of war games popping up on our shelves is a testament to the desire that today's gamers lust for. They are merely fulfilling today's gamers' desire for bloodlust and violence.

Again I say, whether or not you take it into reality is inconsequential. The fact that you enjoy playing these games is what the concern is about.

That's why it's so hard to find a good game of chess or monopoly these days. - unless the chess pieces are killing each other.

i get what ur sayin xeno, i have seen this coming for a long time. u didn't mention americas army pc game. u have to pass basic trainin b4 u can play online. things around us do influence us whether we know it or not.

i remember playin halo 2 online and was loosin, so i put in a 2pac cd in ma stereo. at the end of the deathmatch i ws in the top 3. my accuracy was improved my tactics changed. i dont know why but the music helped.

if human bloodlust is innate, shouldn't we try to control it instead of stopin it. the russians try to stop man from worshipin and u have seen the end result of that

Boy...before this tread I would have imediatly dismissed these kind of complaints...but I now see the who reasoning behind this issue. Funny thing too...Full Spectrum Warrior and Americas army...are'nt these used as "official" training for the US army? next your going to hear that terrorist are using these tactics.

well what ur saying is right but its not going to influence us to really jus go out an kill someone.well thats jus my view still.mi sure seh all of us been playin gta now for a good while.(have we killed any one in real life?)and if we did was it because of a video game that we went on the streets and beat someone with a bat or a golf stick.
Would have to agree with Xenocrates, it really depends on the mind set of the player. Lets face it there are some people out there that do play these games in real life.

This reminds me of a thread I started sometime ago...I think I need to dig it up.....

It all really boils dow to who you are.
Free Thinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, beliefs for privileges. This state of mind is not common, but it is essential for right thinking; where it is absent, discussion is apt to become worse than useless.
