Running 2 NIC - one Computer - Win2K Prof
I have a computer (WIN2K Prof) running two network cards connected to two different networks.
However, each time that the workstation is started up with both cards connected to hub the following errors happens (event log) and none of the cards/networks are accessible:
Event ID 7000
The Network Connections service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
If, however only one is connected when the station starts up and the other connected after all seems to go well....
Can anyone suggest reasons why this is so......?
Regards,
Collin

Re:Running 2 NIC - one Computer - Win2K Prof
Update:
The Network Connection service (services) is by default set to manual and no recovery options set...
I have changed that to Automatic start and the recovery option to restart the service upon all failures.... since then the servies does start but after ~ 5 minutes after logon... I guess this is cause by the 1 minute delays between restarts (3) total...
Still looking for other ways to resolve!

Re:Running 2 NIC - one Computer - Win2K Prof
Hey there Collin.
Just a few questions. When you plug in one, start up and then plug in the second one afterwards... does the second one still take a while to connect?
Does the connection light come on on the hub long before the computer registers a connection?
Have you checked the cable to ensure that it is okay (re-crimping)?
Is the hub defective? Have you tried switching it out with another and got the same problem?
If all that fails, try playing around with the settings in the NIC properties' advanced tabbed (see the attached pic). Try turning down the settings... i.e from Full duplexx 100Mps to Half Duplex 10Mbps and see if it helps.
P.S. Just out of curiosity are any of the network cards CNETs?
Alright, just a few troubleshooting suggestions to start with.

Odsamuels,
Thanks for your response.
Lets take them in order
1) No, if one is pluged in at start up and the other after it connects immediately
2) The switch light comes on immediately
3)No, cables have not been re-checked but they are good working cables
4)No. have not tried another hub at this point
5)Will look at the settings later.. after your response to the below!
6)YES .. both cards are CNET!!!!
Is there a known issue with the CNET cards?

A re-sounding YES! Personally I have found serious inexplicable issues with CNET NICs. To this point it still surprises me because after all.. it's CNET. Nevertheless, once you get up to NT operating systems with 'em.... well... BRACE YOURSELF! ;D
Check those settings and lemme know, if possible try getting yourself different NICs (RealTek is Da Bomb! ).
Let us know how it goes.

Odsamuels...
Changing from full 100Mbps to 10Mbps did not help the situation at all.
I will try to acquire at least one new network card to troubleshoot further.
Will advise of developments.

Re:Running 2 NIC - one Computer - Win2K Prof
UPDATE:
1) Replacing CNET NIC #1 alone does not resolve issue
2) Replacing both CNET NIC solves the problem.
Currently I am now using an Intel NIC and a DLINK NIC these two seem to work great so far... they both load up and display on the sys tray within seconds of startup!!!
I had even gone to the services window and set network connections back to manual and no restarts and all is well...
So the culprits were indeed the CNET cards!!!!!! now I know to advise others to stay away from them!
Thanks Odsamuels for that lead!!!

Well well, the CNET NICs were the culprits Well you know who will try to stay away from that brand of NICs from now on!
Thanks also odsamuels for possibly saving me some trouble in the future

Hey NP, that's what makes this site so great. More than likely you guys will pitch me out of a jam some day soon as well.
As another thing to note, you may just as a precaution want to stay away from even CNET PCMCIA NICs as well; and my own personal preference is to stay far away from 3Com laptop NICs.
PCs -> RealTek all the way... Laptops -> DLink
Just my two cents.

What probs have you had with 3Com PCMCIA NICs?
