    Default Caricel Sold

The Government finally got itself out of a major dilemma as Caricel was sold to South African investor:
The operations of Caricel, Jamaica’s LTE broadband network, has been acquired by South Africa’s Involution Limited under a sale agreement negotiated last October.

“Our choice of this progressive and innovative South African investor is part of our commitment to secure for our customers the best internet experience in the country at reasonable prices,” Lowell Lawrence, Director and CEO of Caricel said in a release

The Government has officially yanked the licences issued to telecommunications company Symbiote Investments, which trades as Caricel.

RJR News has received a copy of a letter from the Technology Ministry to Symbiote yesterday advising it of the decision. The letter, which was signed by Technology Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley, made reference to a letter sent to Symbiote on November 17 last year outlining that the Office of Utilities Regulation had recommended that its licences be revoked on the basis that the company failed to provide information.

The Technology Ministry says this was a breach of the Telecommunications Act. It says Symbiote was given until December 1 to indicate why its licences should not be revoked.

Indeed, I hope it happens in earnest. I knew for a fact that Caricel had violated a number of terms of its licenses especially that of its LTE Band. It had not met any coverage targets nor had it any intentions of meeting them. Band 13 is a very valuable and lucrative band; to have it being squandered by an operator who hasn't the capital or ability to exploit it is a pity. I do see FLOW using this Band very sparingly or in places where they need extra capacity (like in New Kingston) and/or ability to deploy VoLTE with high QoS & great MOS scores. Band 4 is already working well for them it seems, rivaling or besting Digicel's Band 17 network.

So does that mean the services have ended? Do they get a grace period or what will happen now tho? Will they have to reapply?

What does this mean for the customers of Caricel is the real question.

I was wondering the same thing. For some strange reason all the news outlets that I know covered this news report never address any of those critical questions. So at this stage we dont know if they are given a grace period pending an appeal or they have to shut down their internet service immediately if at all?

They have stopped broadcasting their signals for a few days now guess this is the reason why. They are in the appealing process from what I hear
