This card isn't for users looking to upgrade from 290x. It is a 380 replacement.

If you are seeking a higher performance (scores more than GTX 980 is 3dmark 11) and way less power consumption (150w full load) then go ahead.

Looking forward to those benches. I hope they don't disappoint as there are a lot of people waiting for AMD to give Nvidia a run for their money (no pun intended) .

Also isn't the 480 supposed to be equivalent to the 380? Dunno how AMD does their card modelling but I would think that the 390 was their mid/high end card, so the 490 would be the updated version.

Meh... That should have been a $150 gpu from the start.

I guess this one for $139 after rebate isn't bad.

There's speculation that the reason for the lower price is that Sony is ordering large quantities of them for the PS4.5, though their version will be underclocked to around 911mhz.

I suspect that might be sheer coincidence, I dont really see the correlation. I suspect a $200 390-ish spec card has more to do with the price drop that the potential Sony order.

Sony will be using APU not dedicated GPU. The new APU will have GCN 2.0 (Polaris) cores instead of GCN 1.

Also demand normally raise prices not decrease them.

I assume that the APUs will use some of the components that the discreet GPUs do (I'll freely admit that I don't pay much attention to this sort of thing). If that's the case then AMD is guaranteed to receive revenue from some of the components that they manufacturer. Since they want to target a larger market, that guaranteed revenue allows them to price their product more competitively to entice the more casual market. They make less profit per unit sold, but they are banking on selling a larger quantity to make up for it.

Amd makes the whole processing unit in the ps4, xbox one, gpu only in wiiu. So yeah they get revenue from them all
