    Default Radeon r9 290x vs GTX 970

Been checking how the 290x looks against the 970 I had before.

290x at 0% power target 290x at -25% power target
290x at -50% power target GTX 970 Stock (boosted to ~1308 MHz IIRC

So I could reduce consumption on the 290x and have it run similar to 970. The 290x is under windows 10 though.

You need to try other stuff. That benchmark is heavily biased towards Nvidia.

That's weird the score keeps getting less as the consumption increases. Is this normal?

So the 290X at reduced power consumption is on par with a GTX 970 OC'ed? Does that mean the 290X performs better at graphics but bad at Power consumtion?

    Not really sure the details

I decided to do away with the power limit reduction and underclock in favor of undervolting instead. Just found out how to do it. The card was at +63mV and got it to work with the same 1080Mhz Factory OC at -31mV. Seems to save more power than the previous underclock setup and runs full speed. A good bit under 200W I hope. Max temps been 74 Degrees.

The first result I post for the 290x at 0% was clocked at 1Ghz. Previous owner flipped bios switch to that. The default bios is 1080Mhz. So the performance bump is not just windows 10.

I just sold one of my r9 290s. Sold it while it still has value.

Bought it for $220. Sold for $240.

All you people spending $500 on mid range gpu will be sorry next year.

Dam I hope my mid ranged 970 won't be obselete for 1080p gaming next year, cause I don't plan to upgrade it again till the following year .

    Lets step into reality...

a gtx 970/980/290/290x already is struggling at 1080p with some games.

What it comes down to is how much you paid for the performance. I paid $220 for one and $240 for my second.
I sold one of mine for $240. I got alot of performance with the money I paid.

So it all depends on how much you paid for your 970. So hopefully you didnt pay lots for a card that can barely handle 1080p at this point.

I can afford a Fury or 980. But for $500? Not a rahtid. The performance they offer isnt worth it.

And on a second note. See how far down the list the Gtx 780/780ti/ titan x has fallen. All these cards were faster than r9 290 at launch.
