Or the portability implementation, slowed down the high demand need for another area code.

The prospect of a new area code is quite exciting to me, Jamaica will be the only other Caribbean country besides Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic to have more than one area code in the NANP. Digicel and FLOW will have their first experience in overlaying in the NANP, which should set a precedent for other Caribbean countries (such as Trinidad) when the times for them to do the same.

So 2017 is just a few days away and still no implementation date yet for the new area code, we seem to drag our feet on everything in this country.

Default Jamaica's get new area code - 658

    From the Jamaica Observer:

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) today announced that Jamaica now has another area code – 658 – in addition to the existing 876.

OUR says that the new code will necessitate the introduction of a mandatory ten-digit dialling, that is, using the three-digit area code plus the seven digit number, for all local calls.
The new area code takes effect on May 31, 2018.

Yep... you're going to have to dial in 10 digits now so it 876-XXX-XXXX and 658-XXX-XXXX instead of the XXX-XXXX we're used to. Lucky for me, I've been saving numbers in that format for years now lool.
