I'm also running ownCloud on a server along with a separate NAS server that automatically syncs with a WD Live drive for backup. I'm not syncing the ownCloud with the NAS server.

On my owncloud server, I am syncing my phones and computer. I am not syncing my NAS either.

So your NAS is backed up to your WD drive?

I'm also using the ownCloud iOS app to do any iPhone/iPad syncing. One of the benefits is that documents that I want available on the road are on the ownCloud so I have easy access to them and can email them or share a link to them.

Yes, I backup (real-time sync) to the WD Live drive. I don't have a lot of stuff to backup so it all fits. I should also explain that I don't have RAID setup - it's an old machine with 2 drives that I've re-purposed.

I'm gonna use your idea and backup my server with an external drive.

New router is setup and running.

Added a USB 3.0 card to the server. I realized the wifi card was being bottlenecked by USB 2.0. The card use 800+Mbps and USB 2.0 maxes at 480Mbps. *face palm*

Decided to kept the server wireless because I want the router to stay where I can look at it -_-

Will get a gigabit wifi card to balance things.

    So far no complaints.

All my stuff are running as Virtual Machines.
And linked to external storage via usb.

Sometimes I see Write Speeds of 18MBps and sometimes I see of 4MBps.

I know running VMs with produce some overhead, but I like virtual machines

So I need to find the remaining bottlenecks. 867Mbps (usb 3.0 wifi card ac1200) is 108.375MBps. I should atleast be getting 2/4 of that half duplex on usb 3.0 which is 54MBps.

I may need to get an ac1900 pcie card instead of the usb.

There is still work to be done, but for now I am happy.

Will upgrade the servers ram from 16GB to 32GB soon.

Based on this test it seems I am getting the highest possible speed (except the odd 4MBps rates)

My server is about 35 feet away from the router behind a few wall >.>

I was messging around with my virtual machines (idle maintenance). There is a setting to make the virtual hard disk act as a ssd (not even sure if it makes a difference).

So I checked or unchecked it and restarted the virtual machine that runs my NAS.

    NO DATA T_T everything gone.

Good thing I have a replica of that NAS on another NAS. The tears would have been real if I had lost all of that data.
