Now I wish I had waited a bit longer to do a big upgrade after seeing this:

K|NGP|N and TiN have already managed to break the overclocking world records on 3DMark Fire Strike and Fire Strike Extreme benchmarks. They achieved this by overclocking an EVGA GTX 980 to a staggering 2050mhz on an EVGA X99 motherboard powered by a 1600W EVGA supernova power supply. To sustain this overclock liquid nitrogen was used. And the result is an impressive score of 19040 on Fire Strike and 9191 on Fire Strike Extreme.

The lower power consumption with better performance. Plus I like having the option to overclock if I need to, thus why I got the board I have now.

Overclock it and u have a card that performs better than 780ti. Never really expected to get that far this gen with a GPU upgrade. 290x sometimes beats the 780 ti but with low power consumption etc? Nice.

There is always a need to overclock. Do you or I have the highest end stuff? Nope... So there is always a need to overclock.

So with that way i think I think it is safe to say you will never overclock.

Me on the other hand lol...

Isnt the 980 already faster than the 780ti?

talking about the 970. Who have money for 980?

Think with <120% TDP you can get good OC. That makes it worth it to try OC. For other cases where the power consumption is already ridiculous and heat already high I would hesitate

tdp does not determine oc. Lower tdp means it will be lower tdp when oced compared to others.

But yes the 970 would be nice to oc. Can get a good oc and still be under 250watts.

lol I dont oc my cards for a few reason. I dont need to with 2. Secondly my cpu cant push them at stock so overclocking them would be useless.
Finally I would be way of 300watts per card with added voltage..

nah man. I mean when setting OC people can limit the card to a certain power consumption. That in turn limits how far the card will boost in addition to the base clock OC. That's what I get from some reviews I have seen.

"other settings - power limit" Each card will have a different setting depending on the power setup. Like those with just PCI-e slot power can't draw over 75W.

That defeats the purpose of overclocking. Cause when the card reach that power limit it will just underclock.

When I had my 7970 I set power limit to 200%. Doesn't mean it is pulling 500watts. Just means I potentially have 500 watts to work it.

Reviewers are some of the worst overclockers i have seen on the internets. Forums are much better.

After digging into the reviews, I am truly impressed with the 970 performance. I have yet to see a review in which a card has not overclocked well, most being 1500+ boost. Some have great build quality for the price, with the Asus and Gigabyte both sporting backplates. I also love fact that some models are semi passive switching off fans under low load. If the Gigabyte 970 had that feature it would be perfect.
