Yeah, cause they haven't even started improving power consumption of their products as yet much less to release a more powerful one.

My guess is though Nvidia might just allow them to catch up and then continue the trend.

"allow" them to catch up. lol. AMD going to need to sort out power but my guess is they can. Its been a year or so since they released and when that happened nvidia was also "in trouble." They had price drops too. Either way, just going with whoever has the better card and that's nvidia for now. If I can find it to buy

AMD gpu 285 is a new card close to the performance of a r9 280 but with 175w instead of 250watt. So yes they have started. THey just need to get on a die shrink.

Also ofcourse Nvidia will allow them to catch up. Thats how Nvidia makes the big dollars, play the waiting game.

its not really allowing to catchup. The two companies on separate timelines. It's convenient their products don't directly clash.

As far as efficiency, yeah they getting there. They already have the space efficiency but their power situation harsh. Note this is just GCN 1.1 or something. Not GCN 2. I am guessing they can cut the 290 to 256 or 384 bit and use similar VRAM technology to make up for it. Should result in some savings right? 285x could be close to that

Oh yeah, I forgot AMD still haven't started using smaller chips in their hardware, so yeah they are really behind.

Well anyways I'm not complaining as we the Customers are the ones benefiting from the competition between the two, so yeah.

I was thinking of selling my current card and get one of these, but why bother. Might as well wait till they hit the 1k series since they are practically there.

    Just realized these 980/970 are 28 nm just like 780/780 ti/r9 290/ r9 290x.

Even makes it better. nvidia lowered the tdp that much on same process..

kinda makes buy amd at the moment irrelevant unless they do a massive price drop. 980 is ~ 12% faster than 290x and use way less power.

Good thing I didnt spend a fortune on my cards lol.

the real thing starts at 20nm.

I'm still wondering what they did really. I guess I should look at the more detailed reviews better instead of just checking out numbers. Always have this feeling they cut out some stuff. AMD problem is their GPU size smaller and has more stuff. Notice all them extra boxes. Even putting in the crossfire improvements probably added to the situation. Nvidia still using the bridges while AMD has better multiGPU performance and has removed the bridges. They might have to start putting out downsized chips or something. All speculation from me of course.

    AMD

    Nvidia

Yes they have alot on die.

AMD profits will definitely take a hit. There GPU division is what is keeping them a float.
