Default Microsoft Buys Minecraft For us$2.5 Billion

Minecraft, the beloved indie sandbox-builder that went on to become the third-bestselling video game in history, is now officially part of Microsoft.

In the statement, Microsoft says it will in fact pay us$2.5 billion for Stockholm-based Mojang and the studio’s Minecraft franchise. Microsoft says it expects the purchase to “break-even” in the company’s 2015 fiscal year, and that the purchase should be completed by the close of 2014.

Notch is a smart man. Cash out the company while it's still lucrative, and go home with a fat pay cheque.

Default Microsoft To Buy Minecraft Maker Mojang For US$2.5 Billion

Microsoft agreed on Monday to buy the company behind Minecraft, the world-building computer game, for $2.5 billion in a cash deal meant to add the immensely popular title to its stock of content.

Last week, Microsoft was reported to be in talks to buy the company to ensure that the games was available for its family of devices.

As part of the deal, employees of Mojang, the Swedish developer that created Minecraft, will join Microsoft Studios, which already publishes games like the blockbuster Halo.

Wow, US$2.5B to buy the company that makes a game that I obviously totally underrate but kids love. I'm in the wrong line of work.

Sounds dumb but if the game is that big I guess they will make the cash back. I don't really have too much trust in MS decision making though...

I actually don't think that would be a smart move at all. Not if they hope to recoup that $2.5 billion. Minecraft sells tons, sure, but I doubt it's a system seller. By making it Xbox exclusive they would greatly reducing their revenue streams.
