I took a html template from my hosting company and edited it to create my website. I am not a creative person, so it was good to start with the work of a creative person. Strangely enough, it looks very little like the original template. Just the column structure and a few other things from the layout are consistent.
I have learnt a lot from w3schools about writing html code. Really good learning resource.
What size artwork do you normally download from Fotolia for web design and why? I have used images from their website to create the mock up of the site on my local web server. I need to purchase the production copies from them now.
I haven't had a chance to get to Joomla yet though.
Instead of spending money on stock photos for a personal (non-commercial) project, try browsing through http://compfight.com/. The photos there are licensed under Creative Commons.
Or you can try http://www.freeimages.com/, http://www.morguefile.com/ ,
Google search, images section, enter search term, on results click 'search tools', click 'usage rights', select 'labelled for reuse'. Results narrowed down to images you can reuse with violating anyone's copyright.
Finally, http://bootstrapbay.com/blog/free-stock-photos/
If you need to get stock photos from a paid service have the client foot that bill
