Jamaica can earn big money from animation

BY STEVEN JACKSON Business reporter jacksons@jamaicaobserver.com

    Wednesday, July 30, 2014

The World Bank thinks the local animation industry can grow to US$69 million ($7.7 billion) in value in five years. As such, it is investing millions in the sector to attain this goal, but it's a loan that the Government must repay.

"Given the interest expressed recently by global companies, and the demands of the industry, there is good reason to believe that, with the right talent, these numbers are achievable," stated the World Bank in its project document entitled 'Youth Employment in the Digital and Animation Industries'.

"In other words, an investment of just a few million dollars focused on training as well as on showcasing Jamaica's animation industry globally can be expected to pave the way for the country to absorb tens of millions of dollars in foreign exchange."

What's your reasoning behind that? The animation sector is big business globally. Plus, income is a lot higher relative to the BPO sector.

Picture instead of sending their work to a Korean company to animate it, large Western companies came to a Jamaican company. Would be a nice thing indeed. But even so that's something that would be far beyond in the future, unless we have some people with high skill and knowledge who come back here and give it a nice jump start. Knock a few years off the build up.

Going to need proper management though... man there is just a lot more to it than that. So much more.

just saying it sounds like a scam. From the OP. You convince someone that something will benefit them and put them in debt that they have to pay back, possibly with interest.

Anyway, Jamaica should have long been focusing on IT and science, but UWI and jamaica love doctors, lawyers etc. People who don't produce growth. Until Faculty of science and tech (and the alternatives) is a place people would be proud to be, jamaica not going anywhere.

Bidding for contracts from foreign companies shouldn't be the goal though. Maybe a start but ja should have its own large companies later on. Should be able to get a game publisher locally etc. The product is digital so the boundaries are much lower than other industries.

    Forget bidding.

European animators dominate. Jamaica won't be able to compete.

Create our own dammit. There is enuff "buto" on our streets to create entertainment for a long time.

Thing is - we have persons locally that do good animations and drawings - our own local styles, Western styles, European styles and Asian/Eastern styles. They get no exposure, and nothing is geared towards that specific market. It's much like persons in our own IT sector - most persons got anything related to the field they're in until they either went to a college or other school specifically geared towards their goals or got on the job experience.
Knowing the solution doesn't mean knowing the method. Yet answering correctly and regurgitation are considered "learning" and "knowledge".
