@mobile_fan_2k5 - While you're job hunting and have a lot of spare time on your hands I would recommend that you start looking into freelancing - which can make you more than Digicel will offer (while being your own boss). To be effective at freelancing you need to specialize, otherwise you won't stand out. I would recommend that you look into Drupal or Wordpress for web stuff and Android for mobile. There's huge demand for talented developer in those three areas and if you're a talented programmer you should be able to catch on fairly quickly. Best of luck!
with that approach its better to go overseas...

Good place to start looking https://www.theice.com/homepage.jhtml

    LOL nice option there!

but you don't really have to (or can) leave the country ....as most people said make an app/game for any of the mainstream phones....not a copy of a app/game that already exists, but something original. god knows iphones store is saturated with the same old stuff. Not sure what language your more comfortable with but I know quite a few people using Unity3d to develop apps since it has a built in porting option. I was going to dabble in it my self, but only as a hobby.

Check out oDesk for freelancing to kill time and gain some experience while you work on getting the suggested certs and a more permanent job (if you don't get the opportunity through oDesk). I'll be hitting it myself this summer...

You said you liked programming. That's not Com Sci talk. Do you like:

    • Kernel and system development
    • Mobile Application development
    • Low level and device driver development
    • Embedded systems
    • AI and Machine Learning
    • Scientific Programming and Data Analysis

You know, whats your specialization? What do you like specifically? Show us some code so we can see how nice you are.

Well am not much of a programmer but i would recommend freelance work. Who knows, you can even build your own company. Having your skill i wouldn't really think of working for anyone, there is so much you can do on your own. Being a web designer i moved away from the thinking of working for a company etc. Anyways what do i know, am just 21.

I am not surprised that most persons ignored your valued point. Most Jamaicans in tech don't aspire to be like Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg, we just prefer to idolize them. I am in a good job with great benefits, and still have income on the side with plans to pull my self out of my good job to eventually be my own boss.

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) was renamed by the New York times to (Millionaires in training) the lecturers and guidance counselors at that university do not give you a degree and say good luck. They give you knowledge of how to go out and be successful, the degree is just something to hang up on a wall.

If you are really here fresh with a degree and have no clue what next, your University has failed you.

Freelancing is a great thing to do, if you are going to go down that path ensure you put yourself out there... nobody markets you, like you can. Build you network of contacts where ever you can, as it will benefit you in the long run.

so far it seems you have a good plan laid out, hope it works out for you.

Freelance is good and has its perks and downfalls and the same for working for a company. However it depends on your skill-set and career choice working for a company may the best choice to go with first then branching out to freelance when you have the foundation laid out. Finding a good company to work for can open doors that freelancing would not open or would take a longtime to open.

Personally I don't plan on working for someone forever, but I hell don't mind working for someone and obtaining benefits, training and experience that will help lay the foundation for going freelance, starting my own company etc.

The best approach is to weigh ones options and set goals on what you what to accomplish and go after them using the best path.

At 21 you are thinking outside the box compared to some 30/40 year olds I know of..

I have to agree with you that some have the mentality of settling for whatever they can get, but hey thats what they are comfortable with and if they are happy with that fine by me.

Most times it has nothing to do with the university... some people just don't have a set path of what they wanted to do, while some may have had a set idea or path but got derailed for some reason or the next.

The problem is lack of planning and no backup plans... As a student or person new to the workforce you need to have Plan A, B, C, D, E and F if needs be.

For me as I said before I don't mind working for someone to lay a good foundation for going off on my own etc. The company I work for now is pretty nice and the position I have found myself in works more in my favor than the company. Many of our clients are uptight on who from the company they let access their equipment even though we work for the same place. This has allowed me to form a business relation with the owners of the business directly adding them to my personal network of clients for when I go on my own.

I can easily convert to a independent contractor and not have to worry about clients etc. As these companies prefer working with the same persons as long as possible for security reasons.

Me > Main Company > Client
