Default My IT Capstone Project: VMware ThinApp

    SPSU IT-4983-850 Capstone: VMware ThinApp

Well the semester is over and i thought it would be good to share my Senior project with the members of TechJa.
The project went off without a hitch and my group achieved a passing grade of 97.5% AKA "A".

Please visit the website while it is still available.

SPSU IT-4983-850 Capstone: VMware ThinApp Website

PS: The website was created to host the material related to the project and was not a requirement, so it definitely needs some work.

VMware ThinApp is an agentless application virtualization tool that dissociates applications from their native operating systems in an attempt to eliminate application conflicts, while streamlining application delivery and management.
ThinApp accomplishes this by encapsulating the application, its associated files and registry into an individual ThinApp package that can be easily deployed, managed and updated separately from the fundamental operating system (OS). This allows the virtualized applications to run and perform consistently across different configurations. This ensures compatibility, consistent end-user experience and reduced management complexity. The major benefit of the ThinApp lies in the fact that it does not modify the underlying operating system.
Within this project, the team seeks to create and deploy various ThinApps to different environments to test and display the versatility and usefulness of the tool not only in a small environment but larger ones such SPSU’s computer labs. This project will also seek to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using ThinApps

Sure. The project is about virtualizing applications in order to improve user experience/Human Computer Interaction (HCI). See the executive summary below

Yea basically, removing the need to install tons of applications per PC which reduces the amount of resources used on a PC by installed services etc.

Think of ThinApps as portable apps, self contained with no compatibility issues across different OSes, making no changes to your system.

There are videos on the website as well as project reports etc...

hmm any reason Microsoft App-V/MED-V/VDI and included? actually is there a reason you chose VMware over MS?

The Project Owner (a guy in the IT department) chose VMware ThinApps as the school uses VMware for a number of its stuff on the campus, as well as we have a partnership with them so we (students an faculty) get "free" time based licenses for VMware Workstation, discounts, etc via VMware MSDNAA. The infrastructure is there already so with a matter of clicks VMware Thinapp can be integrated into it compared to Microsoft App-V etc
