The encryption used in https slows down processing. Does it make sense for websites that do not process confidential information?

Well jamrock, I think it just depends on what your processing no need for extra overhead on simple websites. Of course security is security still never know what one loophole might lead to.

there could be a scenario where the exploited unsecure simple site could utilize a script or browser based flaw and using a form of escalation, especially if you're browsing another site using tabs etc, get the desired information indirectly. So...yeah be paranoid LOL

Encryption is normally used when transmitting confidential information. In that situation https would help. If you are not transmitting confidential information why do you need to protect the information from an escalation attack?
