there is a general consensus that t-mobile blackberry's cant pick up 3g/4g here in jamaica, it is true that t-mobile operates on different frequencies than our local networks, however when i check the hardware specifications, t-mobile blackberry's pick up the 850mhz spectrum, that fact is listed on many credible websites and even the t-mobile website itself in the phone descriptions. I have owned quite a number of blackberry's but havent owned a t-mobile issues blackberry yet, so i cannot fully attest to this, is it true that t-mobile phones cant access 3g/4g in jamaica?? and if yes, why not??

Y? T-mobile launched its 3G/4G on UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100) and soon to be 1900.

Digicel/Lime/Claro and AT&T uses the 850MHz and maybe the 1900Mhz for their 3G/4G. To ensure your phone gets 3G in Jamaica, ensure you phone supports the 850MHz UMTS band.

However some non-blackberry T-Mobile phones now carry the 850Mhz band such as the HTC Amaze, SGS II (Hercules).

interkaiser44, I think you misread what PrenticeX said. He was not completely clear as I assume he meant once the hardware supports UMTS 850Mhz, which is different from GSM 850Mhz. T-mobile phones are usually Quad band so they will work on 850Mhz GSM only and no 3G/4G as was explained further above.

As long as the hardware supports the UMTS 850Mhz band, and the currently installed Radio Firmware and/or Operating System on the device, it should work.

GSM 850Mhz will give you GPRS and Edge, while UMTS 850Mhz will give you 3G/4G
