Or he can go spend sometime reading up on Odin first make sure he understands it.

Kies is straight forward and simple to use, it also has a built in emergency recovery feature to help re-flash you phone in the even of a bad flash.

You can test kies first. Take out the sim card though just to see if that will allow you to update the phone. Not sure why it didn't work for Jomo, he used ODIN to flash his.

If Kies doesn't work, you will have to use Odin to manually flash the update to your phone.

It's not a hard process once you read the instructions carefully and follow them to the T. Or you could have some else do it for you that knows how to flash phones, preferably someone from TechJA.

Kies is safer.. if you mess up Kies has a recovery feature that will fix the problem for you... plus kies ensures you get all that you need for your phone... also.. if you can do it from a laptop or a desktop that has a UPS. So if the power goes out your flashing doesn't get interrupted

It detects it automatically, if it doesn't there is a menu under tools that allows you to do a manual check for the latest firmware.

Ok great make sure you charge it up. Also you may want to backup your stuff as well. Samsung kies allows you to backup your data.

NOTE: After you upgrade your data and apps will still be there, but I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended a factory reset after you upgrade to ICS.
