Default Facebook Rumored To Be In Talks to Acquire Opera to Create "Facebook Browser"

A rumor has been flying this afternoon about a potential Facebook acquisition of Norwegian browser company Opera. Pocket-lint broke the news in a post earlier today indicating that it had “heard from one of its trusted sources that the social networking giant is looking to buy Opera Software, the company behind the Opera web browser.”

This would be the worst thing for me personally. They already have a "social browser" called RockMelt which integrates stuff. If they acquire the company and then make the browser as normal but with the option for the social networking crap then fine. If they make it that you can't even run the browser without signing in then I'll have to stick to the last version before the buyout. If it's true.

What browser you calling half baked? I HOPE it goes through. This could never happen to an OSS like FF. People would just fork the heck out of it.

If I didn't already use FF, Opera would be next in line. It's an awesome browser imo. I wouldn't have any complaints if Windows came bundled with Opera instead of IE.

Opera remains as the most customizable. FF as the one with the most plugins. Chrome is still fairly new. I still use Opera. It's faster to startup than FF and Chrome when tested on my system. Only a clean IE starts faster. FF is still my preferred browser (though I use Opera more.......) but I can't deal with how it buckles when you have 20+ tabs open. Opera doesn't do that.

Yeah it's true that firegfox takes a while to load up, but I think it depends on the amount of plugin's you have installed and personas, etc. But once it loads up it's smooth and fast browsing from thereon.

The startup and multiple tabs shouldn't be a big issue though once you got more than enough memory and HDD space, especially a SSD HDD.

On the topic of a facebook browser though, I for one will not be looking foward to this as it's just gonna be another browser that probably just looks good and supports a lot of facebook plugins.
