But I can't help but wonder how that will affect salaries for Cisco certified techies?
I don't understand. What is your concern?

It should mean that more companies can now afford to use high end routers. This should actually increase the demand for those specialized skills.

My concern is when all these companies buy the high end routers after a while salaries will fall. The laws of demand and supply will play off just as it did in the gloden days of the MCSEs.

IMHO only those who get in early will really benefit.

    Okay...

As long as Cisco certified people are being paid such a premium, you are going to find bright, ambitious people heading in that direction. Supply will eventually catch up with demand.

BTW, the name of the Chinese company is Huawei Technologies. The war between itself and Cisco has been getting real hot this year.

Recently 3Com formed an alliance with Huawei. A case of sharks circling the ship?

You can lots of info. on this at businessweek.com. Here are a few articles:

I like Cisco routers. They are very reliable, but I don't think I should pay such a high premium for them. I am really looking forward to the day when competition forces companies in that industry to be profitable because they are efficient and not because they own a brand.

Oh yes... I forgot to mention that Dell threw its hat in the ring a year or so ago. They have started out by making low end LAN switches. These are more replacements for hubs than anything else, but the price is right. I have one and have no complaints.

I really don't see them as a threat to Cisco just yet, however.

    Peace
