Is the XP computer up to date. I may be some software the that you transferred is causing explorer to crash.
I have two computers. A desktop running XP (no internet connection) and a laptop with wifi. I downloaded some files from the net using the laptop and transferred them to a folder on the desktop via a usb drive.
However, after the transfer, whenever i select said file on the pc, the folder jus closes and the screen goes blank (except for the desktop wallpaper) and then the desktop icons and start bar re-appear.
Other files i try to open (which were there before) opens fine. I tried using a different usb drive to do the transfer (to see if it was the usb drive that was currupt) and the result is the same. I also tried to open the same file on the laptop using the usb drive and it didn't crash.
I went as far as downloading Malwarebytes using the laptop to the usb drive, then running the scan program on the desktop and also on the usb drive, and no infections/ viruses were found.
Can someone please help. This has never happened before on the pc since i've had it and has just recently started. I transferred files in this manner all the time before.

Well i tried the instructions in the following link and that seemed to fix the problem.

It could be that it's videos that you downloaded and transferred. Some videos - issues with codecs or with the windows preview system - will cause explorer to have issues. Are you running SP3? Which codecs do you have installed on the system? Which player are you using?
Workarounds would be to use an explorer alternative such as Qdir, Explorer++ or FreeCommander. Link below to a thread that you should read about video, or just go to the last page to see which players are suggests.

*EDIT*
I clicked on the link in your post above after making my post - and as suspected it is a video issue you're having. If the preview system is turned on then just change the folder view settings to list mode and apply to all folders.
Open MY COMPUTER and from the menu go to Tools > Folder Options > View. Change the view type to LIST and then APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS.
Some things that will cause that issue with the videos would be a codec pack installed. Some of them change options to other third party installed programs such as HAALI and try to parse the file regardless. You need to remove all codecs and use a standalone player or fix said corrupted video file.

We never know too much that we can't learn. Unfortunately most Jamaicans are about "hurry come up" and swatting than actually learning....
Since you're using VLC and no other codecs are installed (assuming) then use one of the free programs mentioned to get in and delete the problem files. Also - again - are you running SP3?

Yes I'm using SP3. what would be the fix, cuz now that I've disabled the preview feature, I can't view pics with Windows Picture & fax viewer
Most likely the problem is that the video file is corrupted which is why the preview crashes explorer. You need to re-encode it or re-mux it to get it working fine. You can use one of the free utilities such as FORMAT FACTORY or such and convert it to something else. Once done the preview should work.
The purpose of turning off the preview was to delete the faulty file. If you really want it then convert it and then keep it. If you want it in good quality use a bitrate of 3000 or higher. If there are presets (for example in the paid DivX) then you could use that for whichever purpose you like.
