Does your camera come with the option to select what it is detected as - eg mass storage etc?

most cameras come with multi mode, once connected the camera prompts the user to select mode - usb mass storage/webcam/etc,

So use a memory card reader if the camera is giving you issues. Try the link posted and say what happens tho.

if it cant recognize the device just enable the option to let windows search for the drivers online (windows update)

Which error error message does the OS report exactly upon connecting the device to the USB port? That the device is unrecognized/unknown or that drivers are not available even the device has been detected. Reason being, i believe (not absolutely sure) that the OS should at least identify the camera type(eg. make/model) and then ask for drivers if not available. Unrecognized device error could potentially relate to USB issues (possible port on cam).

This is true. Most cameras are designed that they can at least be accessible through Windows/Linux/Mac and come up as storage devices. Even HDD video cameras do the same when video connected. Having a Sony myself it should at least show up and maybe prompt you to import the pictures. If none of this is going on you could have - bad cable - bad port on camera - bad port on PC.

What happens when you plug into a different PC/laptop?

the error that comes up is that the device is unrecognized/unknown.. even when tried on a different pc/laptop.
