Data recovery from a USB stick

I have been trying to retrieve data from a USB stick that keeps telling me it needs to be formatted. I know if I go ahead and have it formatted then the data will be wiped so I have used data recovery on Hirens Live Boot CD to copy the USB image to another USB stick. The resulting image however has a .DD extension and nothing that I have tried seem to result in the files being readable. I have used PowerISO to try mounting it but without success.

I considered using a data recovery software such as Restoration or Recuva but as nothing was deleted this is not an option. Do you guys have any other suggestions please? Thanks.

yup use r-studio or recover my files...the latter i used multiple times to recover things from formatted disks sometimes even 100% data recovery....even some RW disks it work on...lol
