Exclamation MegaUpload Users Planning to Sue FBI Over Lost Data

All the fire and brimstone rhetoric following the MegaUpload shutdown makes it seem like there was no legitimate use for the site. Despite that image, thousands of users were using MegaUpload to store and share their own files, which have now been lost. In response, Pirate Parties in several countries are putting together a list of affected users in preparation for a lawsuit against the FBI.

When MegaUpload vanished, users lost access to their peronal files without any chance to retrieve them. “The widespread damage caused by the sudden closure of Megaupload is unjustified and completely disproportionate to the aim intended,” the Pirates or Catalonia said in a statement. Along with Pirate Parties International, potential breaches of US law are being explored for use in the case.

Of course, MegaUpload was a shady business by all accounts, and users should not have left anything irreplaceable on its servers. This does bring up the question of what a company’s responsibility is when you store your files. If they lose it, should you be compensated?

This is why "cloud storage" is garbage. You sacrifice control of your data to a third party, and when stuff like this happens, you are basically SOL.

Megaupload was not shady. They provided upload and download services. wth is shady about that? Anyone could want to store files on there whether legit or not, it's not like they asked that copyright be breached. People could use services from google, ms etc to do the same. would they be shady then? That last paragraph was just dumb

So how does what happened make cloud storage in general "garbage"? Look at the facts again. It's not as if they just went offline. They were taken off by the FBI. Because they were providing a service to the world that some have deemed to be a problem now.

And if MegaUpload's services are shady, then Dropbox, Sugarsync and all other such services facilitating filesharing are shady too. This article is just showing bias.

While i do not agree with cloud storage being classified as garbage but it does raise some serious questions as it relates to cloud storage and jurisdictional issues.

Like it or not, cloud storage is the next inevitable stage of technological evolution. That means it'll be used for both good and bad. I think jurisdiction is becoming less and less relevant in this regard because it's all about global access.

When people who like to show how much power they have or can grasp go around closing legit sites, services, etc, it's also inevitable that other alternatives and circumvention methods will pop up, with security being less and less a concern. That'll only lead to a much less secure internet. With all this SOPA and PIPA BS, I can already smell a resurrection of cracking/the underground on a more global scale as it was before. People who have their freedom taken away will find ways to take it back...
