Default Router Overload Is It Possible?

Our back ups usually run overnight in several directions local, off site and or offshore. A new machine was configured to take over the backups and for whatever reason the information is not syncing so we are forced to do the initial backup, the type that usually take several hours in our case several days we have been noticing that every morning we come to work to find our network down and after a restart of the router everything is back up, so my question is.

Is it possible to overload a router whether it be an overload in its built in cache, bandwidth due to the large amounts being constantly transferred through it?

Could be a faulty router, in any case make sure you’re using a business class router or switch

Well I'm not sure if it is faulty because we only seem to have this issue when we are doing gigs of information from the office to an offshore location. Business class now hhhmm that is a good question.

It may have to do with the memory. you need to look at memory and CPU utilization during the process to tell

as kenroy said it seams like the router isnt designed to process that much load maybe posting the model of the router in question would help

I was thinking the same but since he mentioned "cpu utilization" I think he is referring to the machine running the backup. Flexx it is a "Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall" and the model is "FVS318".

""I recently bought this firewall based on the info i got from Amazon's website. (FVS318v3)
People if your current bandwidth exceeds 7Mbs please do not buy this product.
This firewall's CPU cannot handle anything faster then 7Mbs!!!! ""

"So this device ships with 100mbps Ethernet ports, however for inside-to-outside performance it seems to max out at 8mpbs, might as well have 10meg ethernet ports and stop deceiving us"

    that post was from amazon.

Thanks Kel but I don't think this applies to us unless my rather lack of networking knowledge is deceiving me but we have a 4MB connection from LIME and the offshore of has a dedicated T1 due to the bottle neck we are clearly not getting optimal performance rates (due to limited upload speed and what not) so I don't think we are exceeding the 7MBs.

Or am I reading into the above incorrectly?

I know those and I have used them for small stuff... they actually do have a limit... the wan port is limited to 10mbps... as when they were made most home users and business were not over 10mbps... dump them...

Build a router for yourself... smoothwall if you want i can sell you one... built with a compact flash card, gigabit ethernet for the lan and fast ethernet for the wan with a secondary fast ethernet for DMZ....
