Unlike most movies, the story behind Star Wars was written and completed before the first movie was ever made. Lucas had the entire story written out, but had to choose which pieces to use for the movies since he didnt intend to or expect to make all nine of them. He choose the three middle ones (Episode 4 - A New Hope, Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back, Episode 6 - The Return of the Jedi). That left Episodes 1-3 and 7-9. The new ones are Episode 1 -3.

So it not so much a sequel as it is telling more of the story. It's kinda like the Matrix. Reloaded and Revolutions were not sequels as much as they were more of the story. The entire story was written from the beginning.

What Lucas might have problems with is living up to the expectations of the fans. Yes, you have a story. But how well can you tell it on the screen. This is where much of the criticism of the 3 new Episodes comes from. Episodes 4-6 had a feel to it and a level of storytelling that has been unmatched by Episodes 1 and 2.

But I also think this has to do alot with nostalgia and the nature of the stories. Episodes 4-6 also had a darkness to them, cuz this was the middle of a war and the protagonists were loosing. Also, the plot may have seemed to be thicker at the time because alot of it was missing (it was afterall the middle of a story). But now that bits and pieces are being filled in, many people are dissappointed that stuff are no longer a mystery and up for debate. My cousin for example hated the biological explanation of The Force that was supplied in Episode 1. He prefered when it was just a mysterious unknown thing.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Episode 3. It's Star Wars. Even if the story might noe be as good as it can be, Lucas is still a good story teller, and Industrial Lights and Magic will always blow you away.

Dude, I totally agree with you 110%. The midicholrians were a cop out. It was lame. Lucas should own up to it. It actually made more sense when they said in the first 3 movies (episodes 4 - 6, 1977 - 1983) that Anakin was borne from the sheer will of the force. It ties in nicely as an analogy of the immaculate conception. Jar Jar should have been executed somewhere in the film. He's an insult to the Jamaican accent. (Yes, Lucas said on the DVD that Jar Jar's accent is part J'can accent!!!) The acting in Ep 1 landed with the thud of a router manual - and the final fight was marred by Obi-Wan's sudden defeat of Darth Maul. That was the lamest moment of the whole film. This dude is blazing a double sabre for God's sake, and a WUSS-***** padawan beats him? For god's sake man. I almost stormed out of the cinema when I saw that. It was LAME LAME LAME LAME...

The pod race was wicked though.

The plotting on Ep II was tooooooo sloooooow.... only to pick up in the last 30 minutes. I tried watching it again, and I swear, I almost fell asleep. I recently bought the first 3 movies and it was incredibly exciting from start to finish. Empire Strikes Back is without a doubt the best of the three. What say ye?

I'm seriously looking forward to Ep. 3, like nDer, because there's going to be more light sabre battles than you can shake a blaster pistol at. That's one thing the new trilogy definitely outdoes the first with. The light sabre battles are incredibly exciting. I like the new martial arts-esque route they're taking with the sabre-fight choreography. It should be wicked fun to watch.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Anakin turn to the dark side, inch by inch. I'm particularly looking forward to the part where he goes out and slays the Jedi. To me, that's going to be the pivotal turning point (and perhaps one of the best moments) of the whole film.

To hell with the space battles. You can't outdo the Battle of Yaavin 5 at the end of Ep4 or the Battle of Endor at the end of Return of the Jedi.

So just bring on the light-sabre battles in over-supply and even if the acting sucks, I'll still go home happy. Light-sabres are the sh[censored]t.

Lucas, didn't have them all written out, he had basic ideas about the story. Those first two movies would not have been such crap if they had been drafted, and redrafted since the 70's.

Jamacian's just come in vogue in last 5-6 years, cause lucas himself said he added Jar-Jar for kiddies, using JA'cans as template.

I like the pod race, but bearing in mind the more important Sith awakening, more time should have been spent on Darth Maul, couple flashbacks into when he was found by Emperor, his training, as a counterpoint to the happy jedi children playing and in class with yoda.

YOu realize the plot thread involving Boba Fett is gonna be forgotten... :-(
because so much time was wasted in other movies that EP3 is gonna be rushed, or drag on too long.

Lessee... to be resolved by incompetent Lucas:
    Count Dukoo
    General Grievous
    Anakin's Turning
Amidala's Death ( come on we know she has to die, cause it would make it sooo easy for idiot lucas to use it for help with turning ..)
    How Yoda escaped/went into seclusion.
    Jedi' extermination
    Boba Fett
    Banning of Cloning
    Formation of Empire
    Destruction of Old Republic
How obiwan beat anakin ( based on anakins supposed power level )
What the hell Chewbacca have to with anything
How come Droids dont recognize Vader/Obiwan/Luke/Emperor/Tattoine
The list is endless, please feel free to contribute
