I have no clue about opening one from overseas BUT for persons who are in the US, you only need two IDs a passport and some other recognized ID. Done this before. Not having a SSN brings restrictions... such as you are not able to transfer money through the bank to other banks unless you have a SSN, they reduce the transferable amount between accounts of the same bank etc. You can use your Debit/Credit/Check card as normal. Also you can't have funds transfered to your account from other accounts without the person going into the bank.

unless you have a business and it involves big $$ then getting a US bank account isn't necessary
some wealthy persons put their funds into offshore (hint hint)

How about purchasing from ebay sellers that only ship to verified addresses as well as sites like tigerdirect and newegg that require US cards?

I believe that will only work for companies that want to ensure you're ok to ship to an address that's different from your billing, it wont work with sites that require a US billing address

Mailpac offers a US address plus credit card
I signed up for both, never used them but I did get my US address which i could send things to
    some ebay sellers ship internationally
I've ordered from ADORAMA and they shipped to JA
for newegg the mail pac address/cc would be ideal
I personally think the "rig-ma-roll" to get a US bank account is too much for personal use
I know of persons with US bank accounts but it's for business purposes
