Well I migrated Twice in my Life. Once to the US and came back home, then to Barbados and came back home. For me Personally there is no place like home. Home for me is Jamaica. I have to agree with Topanaris, once you have access to more disposable income ones outlook on migration tends to change. Now that I am living quite comfortable in Jamaica with a "Secure" job I am feeling quite at home. I have no desires to run away again. As for Crime and Violence that is everywhere. How I view it ....what is to be will be there is no stopping it. So if I am supposed to be gunned down or robbed or assaulted there is no place in the world I can run to; just to avoid it happening to me. Crime is everywhere, it's just that we Jamaicans glorify our crime by broadcasting it on youtube and facebook, where as other countries try to hide the fact that crime is prevalent in their society as well. Jamaican news is now World News as far as I see it. Racism is everywhere just as Crime is everywhere. But for me I am more able to process and deal with a Racist in my own country Jamaica. As I know exactly what to do and what to say to a Racist Pig. If I were to encounter it in another country outside of the Caribbean I am not too sure how I would handle it as I would not be in the "Safe Zone" of My Country or Region. So that would take some time and Psychology. So far to-date I have never encountered direct or in-direct racism. I have the option to migrate to Canada as well but yow, I am a tropical boy...mi nuh mek fi dem deh snow deh... I will be spending Christmas in Canada this year and already I am nervous. But I hope you attain your dreams none the less Vylle.

I will visit but not live , its good to get out of your country and see new places but nothing beats coming home, if they were to free up customs and importation then things would be much better

haffi undastand me cultus.. the main reason for me to want to migrate isnt only for money and crime.. but because i really looking for a place where i feel at home.. earlier on i mentioned that i feel as jamaican as "ras trent" is.. well its because im so dis-associated that i dont relate to the population on a whole at all.. the speach, the mannerisms the dress - honestly it uncommon to me (and sometimes crude & disgusting) that most people where i work believe im not jamaican at all when i've lived in JA and only traveled 3 times in my whole life!! on a daily basis i get asked "you from foreign?" by my students and co-workers

i mean, if a man was raised believing he's an alien and is told he's an alien by everyone he meets his whole life.. wont he have dreams of leaving earth to find his home planet?

I get that alot at my work place too...well them believing i lived in JA for over 20years. Ive been in Canada now for over 5 years sorry to say but I have absolutely no intentions of coming back to JA. Thing I find with working and living in JA is the "Friend link" to get the job I want, IT. Ive seen people who are not even qualified to use a calculator much let be a network admin for a multimillion dollar company. the crime is a whole other story

agreed but what i see is that the bigger countries not just Canada the crime is more spread out so your less likely to be affected by it...not a must mind u. In JA its usually a matter of time, case and point...family friend of mine got killed in my own back yard few months before i left, and then there is the typical late night from work driving in taxi getting held up thing....that was kinda funny for me though silly fellow didnt see the 2 big wad of 1k bills i took out and i gave him a 50 or 100

    @kajil

    1) i agree with ur first statement.. nepotism is a widespread problem in the jamaican job market.. known a few ppl who got jobs in alot of big corporate places simply cuz "ma relative/friend works there".. another problem i see here is some degree of sexism where it seems that it is easier for a woman to obtain a job in most job criteria than it is for men to obtain them.

    2) i travel from home to work through spanish town and york town and on a daily basis i'm hearing bout how "this person dead yesterday" and "dat person get shot last night".. i even been present at a shoot-out where i saw a man get shot in the head executioner style and I myself have gotten held upl.. 1 thing i've realised from all this is that Jamaica is probably the only country where the chances of you getting shot during a hold-up increase when you have NOTHING FOR THEM TO TAKE!! imagine that crap!!

anyway - ur living ma dream

This is what would make me want to leave Jamaica. I haven't really started working yet but it's obvious that the crime is a big problem. The thing is, it's mainly concentrated in the larger Jamaican cities, which is basically where you will have to be if you have any tech related job. So naturally, you're more likely to encounter it.

Aside from that, it's just the culture. I feel like I don't fit in as much as I do in other places.
IDK what to put in this sig..........

with regards to the crime in cities issue: Everyone has their own experience but if you ask me, new kingston is prob the only place where i can work and not worry about a random shootout in broad daylight.. Been in downtown and been shot at and almost hit over by a police car.. on the same day. Been in Spanish town and had a bullet ZING cross ma face and hit the wall, Got Held up in HWT numerous times. I always hearing of murders and witnessed a murder on my way to work, got kicked out of a taxi by gunmen in may pen.. Was by red hills during the "dudus" riots (a story i wish not to tell). house been burgled numerous times in portmore AND stony hill.. now during the night new kingston is just as bad as everywhere but during the day, not a care in the world..

and lastly.. i completely get you.. never fitted with the Jamaican culture at all..

What a lot of people don't realize too is that there are ways to get into Canada without knowing someone. Most of the info can be found on the government sites for Canada, granted a lot of it is buried in there but there are options

Who should apply for a work permit
A work permit is a written authorization to work in Canada issued to a person who is not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. It is required whether or not the employer is in Canada. Usually, it is valid only for a specified job and length of time.

In all cases, if you want to work temporarily in Canada, you must meet the general requirements for entering Canada.
For Non-Canadians - Travel and Work in Canada
Make your dream of traveling and working abroad a reality! International Experience Canada gives you the information and resources you need to travel and work in Canada for up to one year.

You’ve always dreamed of spending a year living and working in Canada. Maybe you want to work at a ski resort in Banff... gain valuable work experience in the financial district in downtown Toronto...

I do't think that it is Jamaican culture, so much as Jamaican mainstream culture - which seems to a blend of the worst boorish, anti-intellectual slavery values, mixed in with two teaspoons of ignorance and mob psychology. You could , of course, start your own subculture, if you're up to it.

    Thanks for the above post.
