    Default How Does This Work?

At the Northern Caribbean University, I realize that for every person, they are asked for their ID, then to create a password, before they can log into their computers, so I am wondering how this work?

Basically it comes as a user account. So it would be your ID number as the user name and password would be the password you created. So its not a case like you using your personal computer, to create the user accounts and then password. Its like all of this is done before a computer is even turned on there.

Networking sure sound interesting if this is the case....maybe a software is used. I dont know.

By the way, all the computers there running Windows 7.

The system there is most likely a Windows domain. Each student is issued an ID number which makes things easier for them in case of persons with the same name. All they do is create an account on the domain within an organizational unit (OU) and check the option to have the user change their password on first logon.

Ok, make sense. So does this mean that the main computer have to be running a Server OS?

Yep. Main machine has to be a server - domain controller - and have a domain setup. Any other directory based client/server setup can do this not limited to Windows.

actually you might want to start off learning about the server OS first...jumping straight into active directory can be scary if you don't know your way around Windows servers.

Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 R2 server should be what your looking for

Right. Got to learn my way around the OS first. I first installed it 2 months ago, and I was like....huh? Is that it? What next? lol....Then I wipe the system and put back Windows XP on it.

Plan to reinstall it again, later on this month or December.
