Is YAP Jack use illegal?

A question commonly asked of me is if the use of a YAP Jack is legal. To answer this question I think it's best to quote from the website of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Technology (www.mct.gov.jm) in their FAQ section (www.mct.gov.jm/mcst_faq2.htm)

Question & answer 18 in their FAQ section (http://www.mct.gov.jm/voip.htm):

18. Is voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) legal? Can I use NET 2 Phone or Dialpad?

Yes. The Telecommunications Act, 2000 speaks specifically to this in section 78 2(c) ii and iv.

As an individual, if you are making a call - Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) - through the Internet for your own private use, this is completely all right. However, if you are reselling international switched minutes or providing any similar voice service for sale, then an agreement must be reached with the existing telecommunications carrier and a service provider licence must be granted by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Technology for this purpose.
