Hello,
My password for logging into windows 7 does not work. Its a brand new laptop and this is the first time trying to login (after first power up setup) and it wont. Im sure the password is correct.
Im reading up on several methods but I need a method that I know works. I have no recovery cd or anything.
Anyway how do I reset the password? Has anyone done this before?
Thanks all.

Try logging with Administrator with a blank password. If this does not work you will have to use a password reset utility. This has been discussed on the forum on many occasions. e.g. http://www.techjamaica.com/forums/showthread.php?85877-Administrator-help&p=614693#post614693

Can also use Ophcrack to find the password:http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ It may be incorrect after all.

AA u so suspicious lolYup. Brand new laptop? Wouldn't need a password to login because it probably would go through the windows installation where you would get to set the password.
Unless windows was pre-configured for them, then there should be a default password (if it's not blank). Could even contact the company you bought it from to get the default password.
Even without a CD, many manufactures allow you to reset to factory default, from a hidden partition.
If it's not a company they bought it from, then they could contact the person who sold them this new laptop, and get the password.
Hence I was asking which brand of laptop and if he bought it locally. I didn't get a response.
So yeah, I am very suspicious. Without those questions answered, I am thinking he has a stolen laptop and trying to get through the password.
But we have helpful members here, exactly what TechJ is known for. So I can't knock them for that.

I only searched for password reset on TechJ and provided the first link I have no personal experience with it. Ask the person who made the original post. If the laptop is "new" :eusa_whis just reload it. There is usually function key for system recovery while booting.

Nooooo its not stolen!
Its my gf laptop. Its a Dell IM5030 bought from Newegg.com
We went through the first power up process and setup a password for the account. She shut down the laptop and tried to login but with no success.
Im going to try Ophcrack soon. The last resort is to reload the OS.

Ophcrack really work with Windows 7? Hmmmmm.....Cuz I did download the version for Vista to work with Vista, that didnt work. I didnt try it on Windows 7 though. Threw away that disc years ago. But I have used other methods for Windows 7.
Thing is....Lawbadman...we are not trying to pin that you are thief, just that we wont divulge information easily. Just have to understand.
I have seen cases where people setup their account and forgot the password....dont know know why they are using a password that is hard to remember. Thing is....you might think you are typing it the correct way...but one or two words could be capitalize and you dont know. For example....TechJamaica ("T" and "J") and not the entire letters being common letters.

Yeah Ophcrack works on Win7, I had to use it for a friend who had so many passwords he didn't know which one he used or in which variation after an install.. (like password would be P@$$w0rd or p@$sword or PASSw0rd etc.)

and just so you know, if you reload the os...only way you will lose info is y formatting, Windows 7 actually allows you to store the info in a folder called windows.old

I have never use that though...thought it was just a regular app to be installed to get the password while no one is paying attention...lol (More like stealing)

It can be used for more nefarious deeds :eusa_shif. You load it unto a usb or cd and boot from it. Doesn't require installation on target machine.

How do I install the bootloader on my thumb drive?
You can use Sardu (http://www.sarducd.it/). It's a multi-boot creator but the bootable files must be converted to ISO and renamed to a ISO/ Live cd that Sardu would recognize in order to have Sardu boot it for you.

I use a third party application called PC LOG IN NOW,once you get it all you have to do is burn the image to a cd and boot from the cd,it works for Win Xp,Vista and Win 7,easiest solution trust me,Done this many times.
