Ok everyone I finally have it, not even a day yet so don't expect too much.
I did a HQ unboxing with my new Lumix ZS7 (wonderful camera):
WqIPokNXV04
I have not done anything to the handset as yet, early days yet. I probably won't get too much into it, afterall I am on vacation right now lol.
Enjoy this for now...

I am guessing he means the design...because it's all the same inside.
I like the Captivate though because it is less glossy an uses more metal.

I have done a review! Bwoy, I am not used to this review thing yet and sticking to my word of making it "quick". This is a very detailed review so detailed both videos are just under 45 mins long!!
If you can sit through it, lol here is part 1:

Part 2 is being uploaded...I could never show you guys if I was back home on my usual bandwidth. Let me make the best of it while am still here lol.
Photo samples will come after part 2 has been posted.
Edit: Wow, youtube screwed up my HD video, this is not how it should look!!
Ok they say "This video is still being processed. Video quality may improve once processing is complete." Let's see.

There are two...one for 3.5mm headset and one for microUSB.

I dunno. While the G2 did make me feel more comfortable with QWERTY phones, I'd have to stick with my Captivate.
About the Arc...that is a possibility yes...but I am also looking at the two beasts...Motorola Atrix (http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_atrix-3709.php) and LG Optimus 2X (http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_2x-3598.php) or even the Captivate successor Infuse (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i997_infuse_4g-3705.php).
_____________
I have updated to 2.2. I decided not to do a video myself but to show you one that does a pretty good overview of the newer features:
S9YnSVvfHpQ
Other changes I found not highlighted in video:
1) Menu options are now in colour. Before it was a white on black, now the icons beside each setting option is in colour.
2) A new Live Wallpaper called "Beach" was added.
3) A new e-book reader application called "Nook" was added.
4) Quickoffice is installed by default
5) New notification icons when USB is connected and when battery is fully charged.
6) When playing music in landscape mode, it no longer automatically goes to the CD Carousel. Instead it shows a landscape version of the portrait mode. You have to now activate that manually by activating "Go to Disc View"
7) The power control widget now has an option for auto-brightness instead of just a 3-step brightness adjustment.
8) Mass storage mode displays differently on phone

infuse is definately worth it man.. that is 1 of my prospective next phones along with the inspire 4G and the Xperia Play.. i just cant help that the Xperia Play needs alot more work before it's feasibility as a phone has been achieved.
i was looking at the captivate for a bit and saw that its practically the AT&T release to the vibrant..as for the LG - it looks impressive on paper so to speak, but i am not sold because i know LG for its inferior quality.. and also, 380MB user free? so what happen 2 the rest??? i suppose to suppliment that you will have to create a ext4 partition and boost swap memory

@RAM130 - not sure of the partitioning of memory for the phone at all to tell u the total but thats what it says on GSMArena, 380MB of RAM user free.. so thats why i thought, WHAT HAPPEN 2 THE REST?! cuz even on ma HD2, the phone partitioning allows me 442MB of ram out of the 576 MB while the rest i suppose is left for the system itself.. soooooo yah its funny that ma HD2 has more user free ram than the dual core LG Optimus 2X

I use OS Monitor to check the ram. I've found all Samsung Android based phones, even the nexus s to have the least available user ram. Samsung's latest, da galaxy s and nexus s have around 304mb available on stock, if you install a custom rom you get 334mb or so I believe.
Its hardware manufacturers that decide how much is for the system based on their hardware. I think most of that ram goes to the graphics as well.

i suppose u are right.. never did much background on the samsung androd phones cuz i never owned one - i think HTC all around is very efficient in memory use.. so glad i got rid of windows off my phone though.. consumed bucket loads of memory
ADDITIONALLTY - i find that if you use a third party home launcher like launcher pro or ADW it significantly reduces the amount of RAM & ROM consumption over native ones such as HTC sense (but sense is SOOO PRETTY :D)
MIUI is pretty good as well.. but i dont like it that much cuz it feels too iphony

:thumbsdown: Coming from a variety of Android devices I have never had an issue with GPS until I got the Vibrant. I could be standing by the a street and the phone thinks I'm at my girl house. Few months ago, I was at the park trying to find my way around, I stopped and the phone start showing me as "driving"..before I know it, the phone showed I was in the water which was like 4 hours away..
Da gps on samsung phones are messed up BAD..just google the thing. It ranges from not connecting, to walking on its own, to just plain bad. If your lucky, it locks on and works good enough for 15mins then goes off on its own. If one browse XDA you will see numerous ROMs with an acclaim "gps fix"..
I don't trust Samsung to get me around anymore. No recent update fixed it.

make it worst the compass is increasingly inaccurate 50% of the time..I even compared it to a mytouch slide side by side...

Detailed gps issue with gps testing app:
piTGDFeerv8
The problem seems vary from phone to phone also. Just look at the gps video, you can clearly see the galaxy s phones(epic and captivate) getting a less accurate lock and jumps all over from 1-6. Then after a while it looses it's connection while the Continuum maintains a steady 7-8 satellites lock.
It's clearly faulty..I would suggest just staying away from any Galaxy S phone released last year at least. When I got my DX I was actually blow away by how stable my gps was to show you how bad it was on the Vibrant. Trust me I even compared two Vibrants together as well.
Anyway just making a point and talking from EXPERIENCE.

Yes, there has been a long standing issue with the GPS module in the Galaxy S series...since 2.1. Well I could speak before to the Captivate now you confirm with the Vibrant. Not sure of the Verizon version or the standard Galaxy S itself.
However, since the update to to 2.2 it has gotten a wee bit less wonky...but still not 100%. It works better when the GPS is being used to geotag photos because my shots have for the most part been accurately tagged.
I think the core issue is when using navigation software whether it be Google Maps or otherwise. It is usually off by 10 or so metres. So the GPS would be one of the few minuses I can see with my Captivate. Since GPS is not a necessity for me at present it is a negligible issue for me.

I've owned a vibrant and captivate in the last few months and the GPS is a known joke. Never ever shows me within 100 yards of my location. I bought a factory unlocked iphone4 last week but sold it after one day mostly because of no swype, widgets and not being tied to itunes. So I still have my captivate with it's funny gps, lag, freezing, crashing etc. A very close call, but if the android worked as flawlessly as the iphone, it would be perfection.

I wonder if persons actually realize the IOS hardly does anything. The IOS is a basic as it gets. Not that it matters to its users though. Just saying.

When I say flawlessly - I just mean everything it was designed to do, it does it well, no freezing, no need for hacking, no lagging etc. Forgetting all the technotalk/stats etc, the iphone is brilliant for the average joe. But of course there are tonnes it can't do side by side with the android. Those of us that don't mind or even enjoy tweaking, hacking etc the iphone will become boring in a day or two.

it is the truth u know.. i mentioned that in my post " why go android" that android lacks some of the prettiness of the iphone. but at the same time offers more customization. in terms of FPS - there are instances where iphone will be smoother than android, mostly it comes to graphics.
As i say guys - android needs to learn a lil from iOS and iOS needs to learn a little from android. but 1 thing i have to say to me that makes android better.. better selection of hardware expecially when it comes to handsets and more features.. that 2 me guys determines the win

I dont think that is possible. They are 2 different types of os. Which Os is flawless while being cutomizable to the max? None to this date.

February 2, 2011, 08:38 PM
here is a ratio IMO for performance and features for both OS's. 10:10 being perfect,
android = 7:8 - its a little good in all counts but still some things to do before its perfect
iOS = 9:3 - pretty as hell yes, but has very little customizations outside of themes, ringtones and wallpapers
synapses - iphone is as pretty as android is customizable, however, android has both looks (expecially sense) and features while iphone is more looks than features
now which ratio would you choose?

I agree ..going through so much Androids, of different manufacturers have proove it over and over. I hate the LAG at times and FC issues and such. Also I agree about the avg joe..
Example, my mom has a mytouch slide. Although it moves fast, she always complains of it freezing up and giving problems(sometimes her sms msgs dnt load, fb problems, FCs) along with poor battery life(shes coming from a nokia). I had to do two factory resets just to get it near right for her. If it was the iPhone she wouldn't be complaining.
Don't get me WRONG, I love Android, just want those lil, annoying things to be fixed, finally..:eusa_booh it's always the same story with the avg joe and Android...none the less, I still prefer the openness plus I work with Google Products alot(even have their laptop) so it's a no brainier for me.
Slowly but surely, Android is improving..

I do wonder how much better an experience the captivate would be if I didn't have to turn an overnight rocket scientist (it is rock science for an avg. joe like me) to unlock this thing. It would be cool to just throw in the sim - no unlock, have full access to the usa app store (not search for hours for my obscure app on some free download site), faster 3g than lime etc. i.e. be a regular att account holder. Is it any better? Anybody have this?

magldr came out with a new release and to match it, a new clockwork mod update has come out. should improve recovery capabilities and better facilitate A2SD and Data2ext as well as partition size allocation..
apart from the FC's i get often i dont mind my current config i must say

dem lame like..prefer team whiskey roms..
Just sucks you have to root to get the "advertised" experience fully..I'm considering the iPhone 5 for my birthday to see how things are on that side. Then back to the nexus, if and when it comes to Verizon.

The Nexus S came out long after the Captivate so it would have one up in some areas.

I like simplicity. Some of the ROMS try to do way too much...
This is the XDA-Thread am following to choose: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887525 don't see that "Whiskey" listed there...unless the ROM is widely supported and endorsed, am not even going there...

more gingerbread men - psh, 1 thing i've learned about software updates is NEVER update until the newer versions works the same way or better than its predecessor.. right now gingy gets a lower score than froyo in quadrant scores and has less compatible apps.

You have alot of reading to do.
1. That's not gingerbread, it's a theme. If you were reading you would know no other phones has it officially than the nexus s. Most of these phones just have the theme. Also if it were gingerbread why are the icons yellow? OK then.
2. Benchmark scores don't show the improvement in "user experience ".. especially quadrant which prefers one cpu over the rest. It's not reliable!
3. Wasn't this the case with froyo? Again go read.. it takes time for developers to update their apps for each new version of Android.

ok, i know that it takes time for devs to make their apps compatible but you have to remember that regardless, many people like myself jump onto gingerbread when majority of the world still rocking froyo then come to a startling surprise that only 1/3 of the apps they have work and are forced back. same thing happened to froyo back when eclair was the big thing so its no surprise to me. All im saying is that i tried CM7 out and thought that at its current stage in development needs to be worked on more before i perma-switch. but to answer ur points..
1. the Liberty i know is HTC Liberty build and its affiliated roms builds so if i see something named "liberty" im naturally going to think its a rom based on the liberty build.. not a themer, so dont blame me for assuming ur using a gingerbread rom if the screens show an identical interface! thats like taking a picture of a windows XP transform pack then blasting people who think its windows 7..
2. Just because no other phone except the nexus S has it "officially" doesnt mean that there aren't ports available for other phones so it doesnt matter if its "official" or not. Not sure if u know but CM7 tonnes of nightlies for gingerbread currently available and other chefs have taken these nightlies and made them into daily use roms such as MDJ. My phone has 4 different gingerbread roms and a good number of other phones (not sure which) have their share of CM7 nightly ROMS as well.
3. these same nightlies come with different colors such as red, orange, blue and standard green and even built in theme managers. additionally, metamorph/ninjamorph is supported now by the nightlies so its possible to theme it any way you wish - my point - there are MANY MANY WAYS of getting yellow icons on gingy.
anyway, i digress - but it does lead me to ask the question, techno, is the rom u got a gingy themed froyo or is it a gingy nightly? (i should have asked that in the first plae -_-)

You missed the point...I am talking officially, not sum CM7 crap on a phone not made for Android. BIG DEAL. What I was saying is that there is a reason major selling phones don't have gingerbread yet and why Google takes long..so saying it NEEDS WORK, your not even running an official build of gingerbread much less..
You argument is invalid, unless you have a nexus s.

@ RAM dude - ur getting out of hand here.. my original comment was about the gingerbread based rom on technoboy's phone and now ur diverting to the official gingerbread release and nexus S.. y u do dat boss??
let me recap to make things clear before u go on and tek the topic 2 far... i saw the gingerbread themed home launcher on ya'lls phones and thought it was a gingerbread nightly rom and thats why i commented on the state of the nightlies.. done.. dont need an argument about the official gingerbread OS cuz neither i nor anyone here to have much experience with it yet.. Jeez! no need to get exacerbated over the issue man - now lets move on
@Djmurkuri - :eusa_hand stop instigating nyaguh! :icon_lol:
@ Technoboy - yo, all now i have no idea which android verion ur rom is build on but i think the blue theme actually looks WAAY better than the green!! i like the black and grey with the outer glow effect on the buttons!! if i could id definitely try meta-morphing the framework of that rom and putting it on my phone but compatibility might be an issue
