no, its different from a disk drive, its electrical. whenever its formated all the original space should be available. however at factry shipment the size will not show the amount it should because of...(just went blank, i need to go and look this up again.) oh well is like an HD the actual size when shiped is less.

probably it works like a hdd whereas when you format you hard drive it doesnt completely get deleted it just gets encoded in some sector of your hdd(open for riddicule and scruteny)......

the memory card would be the same as the jump drives right? (no moving parts). i have formated my jump drive so more often, and the size remains the same.

It could be that the phone's OS/software reserves some storage for its own purposes. Seen that happen with the Memory Stick Duo on my P800.

ya'll know the meaning of flash memory, what ya'll are talking about is pure nonsense. The size of flash drive or SD Card or any other storage media never changes and gets smaller each time you format it....that just dosent make tech sense.....I have a 256 SD Card that has been formated over 50 times already and the size is still the same ....so ya'll stop worring over crap...

Formatting the card does reduce it's size each time, because of things called "Factory/Manufacture's Defects" which maintains the internal filing structure (eg FAT / FAT32 /NTFS on windows or DOS)
When you "formatt" a memory card, what you actually do is simply blanken the actual "root table" which causes your files to be overwritten the next ime you store items on the card. Once you formatt a card, the files are still there (you can't see or access them) untill your phone/Camera/PDA overwrites them with something else
