Ok ppl i need help im having a problem installing ut2k3. I am on a laptop now, i am not sure of exact specs i know it has a 64mb radeon mobility processor, about a 1.8 ghz amd athlon xp and about 512 ram. Its running with windows xp home. WHenever i try to install ut2k3 i am told that i need to download directx 8.1b, but this computer has had the first windows service pack installed and that includes 8.1 b and it also has direct x 9 installed as a upgrade to 8.1, now i tried using it with both of them and it doesnt work and i uninstalled 9 to see if it would work but that didnt help. Any other suggestions?

It doesnt seem like a hardware problem. Try uninstalling DirectX 9 and put on DirectX 8.1b yourself (not with the SP). See if that works.

Did u install directx 9 when it was first released???

:::This might help:::

1. Remove directx and install the version on the CD.
2. Install the game.
3. Upgrade directx (optional).

That should solve your problem, if it doesn't work. You might have to do what most techies do at the first sign of a problem; FORMAT.

Unreal 2k3 usually works best with Nvidia cards. So in order for it to work properly with other cards its best to have the latest DirectX installed. (In this case directX 9).

I think that you need to get a different "demo" from the one that you have now.

ok ok...how about first updating the graphic drivers....could possibly be the problem. if the graphic drivers are not v9.0 ready, there may be conflict.
9.x gave some issues when it first came out and MS did do some work on it. I would say check out the GVid drivers first as this may be the bottleneck to installing. often installers dont quite get it right when they come a cropper. just a thought.

see this from internal help file of ut2k3

3.5 Direct3D
-----------------

Please ensure that you are running the latest drivers for your graphics
card as Unreal Tournament 2003 stresses the hardware and drivers to a
greater extent than most available games and we rely on a number of
bug fixes hardware vendors incorporated into their latest drivers. To
obtain the latest drivers please visit the website of your graphics
card manufacturer.

3.8 Radeon 7x00 issues
----------------------

Radeon 7x00 cards exhibit a couple of visual flaws like the hanging
banners in BR-Anubis which will be addressed by us for the full version
of the game.

We recommend using the 7.76 drivers (Catalyst 2.3) drivers as they
incorporate fixes for running Unreal Tournament 2003.

hope this helps.

Direct X is a funny thing, How do u uninstall it cuz when I put on 9 on my system and tried running 3d mark 2001 SE it said it neeed direct x 8.1 to run but when i tried uninstalling it that couldn't work.

BTW are you getting the error when you try to install it or when you try to play it?

Has anyone heard of UT 2003 being installed on XP Home?? I have no dealing with XP home so I just want to know if anyone here uses it.

What wit the grumpy face?

According to M$'s website, the only features XP Home is missing are:

Remote Desktop ? remotely access your Windows XP Professional PC, from another Windows PC, so you can work with all of your data and applications while away from your office.
Offline Files and Folders - access to files & folders on a network share when disconnected from the server.
Scalable processor support ? up to two-way multi-processor support.
Encrypting File System - protects sensitive data in files that are stored on disk using the NTFS file system.
Access Control ? restrict access to selected files, applications, and other resources.
Centralized administration - join Windows XP Professional systems to a Windows Server domain to take advantage of the full range of powerful management and security tools.
Group Policy - simplifies the administration of groups of users or computers.
Software Installation and Maintenance ?automatically install, configure, repair, or remove software applications.
Roaming User Profiles - access to all your documents and settings no matter where you log on.
Remote Installation Service (RIS) ? support for remote operating system installations where desktops can be installed across the network.
Multi-lingual User Interface (MUI) add-on - change the user interface language to get localized dialog boxes, menus, help files, dictionaries, and proofing tools etc.

So, looking at all these stuff that's different, your XP Home should be working ok with UT2k3.
But hey, we ARE talking about windows here, anything could go wrong ::)
