I was thinking, how about putting up a hardware library section where only information about hardware is posted, its not really a discussion but rather an archive of data where we will only add ontop of whatever someone else has left out .

It would serve to kinda help others who want information to visit and search for a particular topic of hardware.

We could do it weekly with history of the hardware and current applications.

Just an idea still, holla back lemme hear what you guys think.

I think that I have an idea of what you're talking about devnull, but I'm still not clear. Is it an archive of info specfic hardware devices? What type of info?

Basic hardware and how they work. It could be a newbie area where us, the older ones, just create a kind of database or archive about hardware that we think new computer enthusiasts should learn and understand and give them an introduction into the more complex items. But its more of a library where members post links or compile data into a summary so that others can benefit without the hard work.

ok I see what you mean. I think that this would be better served as a series of articles on the website, not in the forums. If you or anyone would like so submit an article or two along this line, feel free.

I think this is a good idea, jamaican kids don't have a local area where they can go to reteive any form of It info, lets face it the library is a waste of time especially in the rural areas.

Sorry Skillachi, but there was a previous discussion about having a chat room and it was decided that it would not be appropriate because any valuable knowledge shared in a chat room only benefits those in that conversation rather than being stored in the forums forr all to benefit from.

I would suggest that you IM those individuals that you wish to link up.

Here Here on that one Chris, a chat room would be inappropriate at this time.

I like the ideas guys and I know a lot of kids who may need such a document especially in time to come.

So....

Ok...

Let us see the volunteers

Not to disagree with you on this Chris but its kinda quicker to speak to another techie when we have a chatroom in place.

Maybe we could just use it to come to an agreement in the chat room and then make a thread and post the conclusion we have come to. But this is only in instances when we are unable to all meet or connect with messenger [since most of us use it].

Point: Matronyx cant run MSN Messenger at work but he has ICQ, I use Trillian and have both running at work. Ropy has MSN but doesn't like ICQ cuz it has a security hole [is it realted to the actual ICQ program or the ports it uses? or better yet, hat is the security issue it has?] I dont use yahoo's messaging program nor feel the need to but I'm sure someone uses it out there. But thats just a small scenario based on my point of view. i still agree with your point on the chat room but just wanted to voice my opinion on the matter.

But all in all, once we have messaging programs we can all chat to each other and relay the message to anyone who we want to know it.

These are some good points, I guess the boils down to a win and loose situation and it looks like the chatroom has lost :(

I think Chris is right on that chat room issue. One of the major concerns with a Chat Room is a matter of discipline. It's far too easy to swerve off topic and get into long heated discussions in a chat room, in which valuable points are muddled and inevitably lost to the confusion that can ensue.

When a forum based situation is forced, all related information is permanently stored on the forum. Furthermore, the authors of the posts have enough time to edit their posts before and after posting, hence maintaining the consistency of a thread. We all have instant messengers of some sort at our desks. We should make use of those.

I really wouldn't want to see the same sort of chat room looseness become a part of techjamaica as it would significantly detract from the forums and the piety that this site has been able to maintain thus far. Most of the frequent posters, would eventually boycott the forums altogether because the chat room has a more "instant" effect. For the sake of all the readers, let's stick with the forums.

I've seen some pretty ridiculous behaviour in chat rooms from other Jamaican websites from visitors with very crass to no behaviour at all. I don't want techjamaica to become a watering hole for such hoodlums. In such a case, a moderator has to be there 24/7 to ensure that people stick to the rules. It's far easier to modertate a forum. And furthermore, we would less likely become a point of attraction for such loose individuals who may visit the site from time to time.

While Devnull does have a point re: multiple people chatting instantly, can you imagine how much of that conversation will drift off into non-essential issues and how much valuable information is lost? If TechJamaica were a general chat forum, perhaps. But it already has its objectives clearly defined, and a chat room flies in the face of just about all of them. Let's keep the chat on a personal scale, out of the eyes of the public. At the very least, we can continue maintain the face and integrity of the site's content. Kool?
