Although it is unprofessional to discuss salary, I think this makes an interesting study, especially if you compare it to a poll of the sectors in the computing industry where eveyone works. (assuming that the sample is the same)

January 20, 2005, 12:15 AM
It's called professional ethics gentlefolks. Techie or no Techie, discussing how much you make is highly unprofessional. That's why the poll should remain anonymous. Consider the following implications if this poll were Otherwise:

- It leads individuals to making false assumptions and presuppositions about each other (especially with respect to their lifestyle) even if you don't really want to. In fact, I see at least 1 post in this thread where someone has already made this blatantly obvious. That person knows themself. There is such a thing as too much information. The human mind is a naturally evil thing - even if you think you are not.

- Having an anonymous cross-section of salary earnings for the tech community proves to be far more useful information to me (maybe I'm considering a career change?) than how much John Brown makes. When I know how much John Brown makes, I forget all about the fact that John Brown is a techie, and I think "wow, he makes 180k a month!" Jealousy is a funny thing. It has no preferential target. ;)

- Furthermore, it's usually not a good idea to put fine details of your personal life up on a public website which gets at least 500 hits per day - many of that number from anonymous unique visitors. I mean c'mon. Who here wants to setup themself for an armed robbery? Have we forgotten that we live in the 4th most violent country on earth? Hello?! Have some of you fallen on your skulls? :eusa_thin

People have a nasty way of loving to chat other people's business. So keep it anonymous and professional. That's the way to do business around here. ;)

Malloc-X
January 20, 2005, 07:34 AM
I totally agree with xeno, people shouldn't be askin other people how much they make its just wrong. Its in the human nature to be jealous, did u guys watch the movie ghost? and i am not evil, xeno u know this :)

Chris
January 20, 2005, 08:25 AM
While I will agree that it's inappropriate to ask individuals their salary, asking persons to indicate their salary via an anonymous poll is quite a common data collection technique. No one demanded anyone to post and identify their salary, and I'm sure that there are several who responded to the poll who haven't posted, and vice versa.

tech_guru

I have found...The level of ones income is directly related to your expenses...
That is the more you earn inevitabely the more you will want to spend...
Then a time will come when your income is not sufficent to support new expenses..
At this point you ask for a raise or go job hunting...

I am at the latter stage right now...

You know that is after mi vote mi realize that the poll was for "IT sector worker"
only. Well even though my earning are not IT related, I am very knoledgeable when it come to IT issues. By the way how you add smilies to the body fo the messages.

I think thing poll is very interesting and i must agree i would not have placed my vote if the whole a unno would know mi business (i need to learn that smilie thing).
But what would make it more interesting is the level of education that is attached to those salary ranges.
Thats just a thought though.

Yes that is the case....after taxes that person might make 4,200 per month..Rent might be 800 - 1000 depending where you live... so it can be just as expensive...

I moved to Florida, and yes although things are lot more expensive here, not to mention there are just more things to spend your money on, it balances out, but not exactly. Lets take for instance that hypothetically speaking im taking home US$4,000/mo which is roughly JMD$240k/mo and i pay US$1k(JMD$60k) in rent charges, the difference is a whopping $3k or JMD$180k, and since rent is the biggest expense really, u now have alot of money to play with. Some peeps would be more than happy to being paid that right now, but you know why this society suffers from unemployment, they all think that if they aint wearing suites, sitting behind desks, making atleast $50g a month, that job aint for them. Of the 101 persons polled to date 12.87% are making salaries above 180 gran. Can someone please give us an idea of the job post which gives this type of compensation and the most likely companies that these people work for?

Better yet, for all the people who are familiar with people making over 80 gran, please do the same. More importantly which jamaican company is willing to pay this type of money?

Are the people making over a 100 gran per month mostly top level managers?

from my experience the more increase in pay i got the less disposable income me have, for the first mth it nice but after you adjust you find you just living a richer broke life. i dont think is how much money you make i think is how much you have the day before payday cause in my experience @ my company managers calling accounts to find out if pay ready same like regular exec.(even though them making twice as much.

just because a person grosses > 180K per month doesn't mean that they're rich (not poor) ;) You would have to take into account their monthly expenses, commitments, debts. The more you earn the more your living expenses increase.

Yes for some reason the more money u make, the more it seems that expenses increase.
This may seem true..but it is US that create this bad economic situation...
when we start to earn a bit more...we want more...why!!!?...we want a better car that 'suits' our new status,....we want a new 2 bedroom apartment although we live alone and the 1 bedroom apt. served us quite well for 2+ yrs...We're under the illusion that we this around us are getting more expensive - which often times is the case - , however we create a situation which adds stress to our income.....
All that said i will admit that people do have expenses, commitments, debts but most of these were there we we made say $45k a month, now we're making 80k+ and we have more....if the expenses(barring gov. fees) remain constant or decrease then over time things should be looking better, rather than consuming every new dollar earned.

I guess aonekilla has a point :) The poll was meant to be a snapshot at the time.
but it would be redundant to have a similar poll created again for the same purpose
so I guess we should let it alone. I too have climbed up a bit in the poll categories
since last year :D

@silentburn.. look carefully, the poll isnt about take home, its about gross pay.

Ok, but if you are getting JA$130,000 after tax that would still be real good money, atleast for Jamaica. If some people are paid JA$180,000 gross, it would be safe to say that some are atleast taking home JA$130 000 in their hands.

'The more you earn the more your expenses increase' This only applies to the foolish ;)

The real issue is why do Jamaicans tend to live above their means?

REC with your genius capabilities you should be making a lot! don't make ur mind go to waste!

i see most of the people who vote for in the two lower tiers... i hope they are undergraduate or high school students who work part time.. ..because it is sad to know what everyday working people earn for a living, especially those with good qualifications.......and thats ridiculous!

lol This is the 2nd year anniversary of one of my better threads and its still alive!

I wish I could have made it more specific narrowing it down to the different fields
that fall under IT but this forum software doesn't have said features .

I think a new poll should be done with the following options:
0. not working
1. min wage - 40k
2. 41 - 80k
3. 81 - 120k
4. 121 - 160k
5. 161 - 200k
6. 201 - 240k
7. 241 - 280k
8. 281 - 320k
9. > 321k

That should better reflect the spread considering the raises and the 13 people
who voted for the last option :eusa_doh:
