Debora purchased a computer system one year ago, for her in-home business. She works as an accountant and her primary job functions include extensive data entry for billings, reports, bank statements, and monthly financial statements. For the past few months her productivity has been impeded due to files taking a long time to open and save, so she contacts you because you work in the Information Technology field. What should you suggest that she do? Choose the best option(s) from those listed below.
a) Tell her to run Disk Defragment and select the option to Defragment.
b) Tell her to run Check Disk and select the option to Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
c) Tell her to run Disk Cleanup and select the option to Compress Old Files.
d) Tell her to run Disk Defragmenter and select the option to Analyze.

Debora is constantly updating files on her computer's hard disk. When files are saved they are placed in available space on the hard disk. Files are generally saved in contiguous clusters, but as files are expanded upon and other files are deleted segments may be placed in alternate locations. You should suggest that she run the Disk Defragment utility and select the option to Defragment. This will perform an analysis of the drive followed by the defrag process. This utility will locate the fragmented files and relocate the pieces to a location to occupy a contiguous space and therefore improve the speed and performance of your computer.
Correct Option(s):
a) Tell her to run Disk Defragment and select the option to Defragment.
Incorrect Option(s):
b) Tell her to run Check Disk and select the option to Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. - The Check Disk utility will allow for readable files to be recovered from bad sectors on the hard disk. You may wish to run Check Disk, if you are experiencing errors when attempting to save or open files.
c) Tell her to run Disk Cleanup and select the option to Compress Old Files. - Running the Disk Cleanup utility will free up space on your hard drive by deleting and uninstalling unnecessary files and programs. It may also free up space by compressing old files that should not be deleted, but are not used frequently.
d) Tell her to run Disk Defragmenter and select the option to Analyze. - Although you may use this process to determine if the disk should be defragmented, you will still have to press the Defragment Now button after the analysis.
